My wife drives a 1998 Lexus ES300. With just over 90,000 miles on the odo, it seems time to replace four rotors and four sets of pads on the discs. Lexus dealer in Boston area says: $1071. Local repair shop says: $800. Does anyone have any advice on what I might get for my extra $271 other than a loaner and a car wash? I do trust the local repair shop, but since the Lexus rarely visits a dealer, perhaps an occasional visit is not a bad thing?
Also, maintenance manual for the Lexus is silent on replacement of timing belt. Perhaps I should do this, just out of pure caution?

Other than that, 2002 Tundra is running fine.
my mom has a 1999 avalon which uses the same engine as your lexus. She replaced her timing belt and that was all..I just got done with all this timing belt work on my v8 tundra and let me tell you i would advise you it's more then just a belt for example look at replacing cam seal water pump (water pump o ring seal's etc) it cost more on the long run and labor is about $250.00 dollars with part running around $300.00 . Water pump is $92 and toyota grade and idler's are $55 each on tundra not sure what the 3.0 liter v6 has?Your v6 is a great engine just make sure you replace the water pump too it's not needed but serves the purpose of safety.

If this shop has done other Toyota V6 t-belts (Camry,Avalon,Sienna, etc) the ES300 isn't going to be that much different. Same with the brakes. I would stick with OEM brake pads,I see a lot of brake squeal complaints due to aftermarket pads.
Recommend timing belt replacement is at 90K miles. If you haven't replaced them yet, have the power steering and AC/alternator belts replaced too, they have to be removed anyway during the t-belt replacement. Like Erik said, replace the water pump too, regardless if it's leaking or not...the pump is easily accessible when the t-belt is off.

I'm taking both my mom's 1998 v6 camry and my lexus gs300 to the toyota dealer. They quoted me just $179 for each of the car to change the timing belt. I bought the factory timing belt for the gs300 on the web (toyotaandlexusparts.com) for only $28. I recommend you call a toyota dealer around to check the price. I live in southern california so I can't imagine that toyota would charge that much for timing belt change. I'll probably change the water pump as well.. but that'll be around $100 more. Don't pay more than $400 for timing belt, drive belts, and water pump.

To be honest it involves more then just a change of the belt's and water pump and often dealership's take short cut's on performing this work. The 3.0 liter v6 used on the avalon, camry, camry solora, lexus gs300 and es300 have a idler tensioner and anything ball baring will have issues (not meant to last more then 150k) so if your putting on a belt might as well safeguard your engine and get all the ball baring part's removed and replaced as a safeguard also since there in there review the small thing like engine cam seal's ,water pump o ring seal's there cheap now so review them ..have any other question pm me since i also know a little bit on the 3.0 v6 too my brother has this on his solara and my mom has this engine on her 99 avalon
dealers, dealers..... i hate dealers.... thats all i gotta say.
the most frustrating about takin it to the dealer is that you go through a series of workers/employees to get one job done. if something is up you have to talk to a series of worker to make ur complaints.
