Sat inside the new ES350 today. Not really impressed with where Lexus is going on the interior of this car. I don't like the door panel at all and the dash is kind of boring. Switches and buttons don't feel all that impressive and the interior design just didnt do it when seen in person. Granted this ES350 was the base trim. Even the wood felt cheap.
I sat in the LX470 new for 2006 and the interior is much nicer than the ES350 and why I bring it up is because the LX seems to not have any cost cutting inside.
For some reason you really start to notice the cost cutting in the ES350, the centre console was very week and could be moved very easily.
This leads me to wonder why not put the ES on the Avalon platform. I know the Avalon is similar to the Camry but I don't know why but the Avalon seems to be the nicer buy.

I'm surprised you stated the truth about certain detail's you found in the Lexus vs Toyota. My mom went shopping for her new car back in 99 and noticed the same deal she was reviewing getting the Lexus Es300 at the time but due to the fact Leg room and head room suffered it wasn't worth it and I wasn't too overly impressed with it.The Avalon Xls was a little bit cheaper and had pretty much the same quality she went with the Toyota Avalon which is based on a tab bit longer platform vs the Es300/Camry. To sum it up the Toyota offered more for the Price vs a fully Loaded Es300.Lexus does share similar engine's and trans with the Es and Camry yet One does provided more in terms of overall NvH (Lexus being the quieter of the 2). The 99 Lexus I didn't care for the door were frame-less and overall it just looked cheap vs the avalon which had a roomey interior and a longer wheelbase vs the ES entry level....
Lexus car's and SUV shared with Toyota
Toyota land cruiser> Lexus Lx470
Toyota Sequoia> Lexus Gx470
Toyota Camry>Lexus Es350
Toyota Avalon On a longer platform based on the Camry
Lexus Flagship Ls400/430/ > on a league of it's own v8 powered..

I believes the Lexus GX470 share the same platform with the 4Runner not Sequoia.

Actually the GX470 is a clone of the European Land Cruiser. If you go to Toyota UK, the Toyota Land Cruiser there is our GX. They have something called a Toyota amazon that is our Land Cruiser too, oddly enough.
Their Land Cruiser is indeed loosely based on the 4Runner I believe.
The new JX will be based on the Sequoia, and likely replace the LX, unless they keep the LX as an off road luxury car to compete with Land Rover and the new Mercedes GL class.

I am pretty sure the Land Cruiser and the LX are history after this model run. At least for the US market.
IMO, Toyota should make the FJ, Sequioa, Tacoma, and 4runner have a land cruiser trim line with locking diffs, better shocks etc.
So basically you would have SR5, limited and land cruiser editions.
Sorry to hear you don't like the new ES. Just picked mine up a week ago. Love it! Most quiet car I've ever been in. Replaces a 1998 Volvo S-70 GLT. Final choice was between the new ES, Acura TL and Infiniti G-35. Only 100 miles on it so far and I'm taking it easy. Still adjusting to no key, push-button start, HID/AFS lights, rain-sensing wipers, etc. Looks great, feels great, rides great!
Those cars are all fairly different. The ES and TL aren't quite as sport oriented as the rear drive, more powerful G35. Anyone seen the G35 redesign yet? It's beautiful, and definately has improved quality and even more power than the first generation. The TL is pretty quick, and with a 6 speed, is fairly sporty, though front drive hampers it. The ES isn't really as sporty as either of these two, being a front drive, auto only Camry, but will likely be the nicest of the bunch.
The IS really competes with the G35 and the TL, though the IS is pretty darn expensive compared to those two.

I think I have discovered an pattern here. Get the buyer with the fattest wallet possible to buy your cheapest product in the luxury line, and make them pay through the nose for repairs to fix whatever they fuss about. They won't care about how much they spend anyway as they spent a bunch of bills to get the car they want to have status in.
NOW, on the other hand, we have the buyer who wants to spend less but maximize FEATURES while scruntizing the build quality. You will CUT a deal with this type of buyer to deliver them a vehicle that works and reliably transports whatever they fancy to transport in and save them the repair bills.
See the pattern here? They're scraping from the TOP of the iceberg to be able to pay for the quality builds on the lower end of the income area that buys the vehicles. I noticed this pattern is starting to make itself slowly evident with Lexus (Luxury divison of Toyota) and Toyota's non-luxury division.
