Default Replacing Lost Master Keys

I've read recently that if you lose both master keys, you need to have an extensive replacement of the computer components, resulting in a very expensive repair. Is it possible that the codes and other information to make a new master key would be available in the dealer's or Toyota's database ? That is, would this have been programmed in at the factory (or delaer) and could this information be retrieved by knowing the VIN ? Similarly, could one use the valet key as a starting point for accessing such a database, if it exists ? Isn't the code in a key the same unique one as in the master ?

Yes, your new keys have to be programmed at a Lexus Dealership. Depending on the year and model you have, the computer will have to be replaced in order to have the news keys programmed. If that's the case, contact your local dealership, as Lexus should cover the cost of the new computer if its the first time this has needed to be done. You are required to order 2 new master keys and pay for the labor to install the new computer, usually an hour. If you happen to have one of the newer models, you only need to order new keys.

If you have further questions, you can call me and I can try to explain it better for you.

Hi, It all depends on the year and model of your vehicle. You don't have to have them replaced at a dealership, I'm certain of that. You don't need the computer replaced unless you have the wrong computer in a vehicle. Rob

Rob's right on the money.

I use to work for one of the country's largest key blank manufacturers (i.e. Kaba Ilco, Corp) and we ran into this issue several times, with one poor guy who bought his Lexus at an auction, with only a vale' key. It ended up costing him 3 grand to have the computer replaced!

On the other hand as Rob said, depending on the year and model, the computer can be "flashed" with the right equipment to erase the old codes and allow new ones to be programmed. And many independent locksmiths have all the electronic equipment needed to do the job, providing your Lexus isn't one of those "bad" years or models.

Hi. When I purchased my 2002 RX300 in Florida, I did not know it only came with only the valet key. I drove it back to Canada and in Canada they wanted over three grand to replace engine computer and two sets of keys. Plus they told me that I would also need a new valet key! This was at Lexus Calgary! When I called Lexus of Spokane they told me differently. They covered the cost of the replacement computer and I did not need a new valet key. They saved me more then half what Calgary was going to charge me AND they were much nicer to deal with. In the USA, Lexus will cover the cost of the engine computer for free once and only once if you need master keys. They did for me! It was a nice drive and did some shopping at same time. When I arrived at Lexus of Spokane, they treated me like a King. I will go back there for my timing belt when time comes. For all you Canadians who are getting gouged in Canada, consider having the work done in the USA.
Wishing you all a great day.

R. May
