Default Lexus GX 470?

Hello,

After replacing my Transmission and rear end on my Ford Exploder with under 80k mi, I am now in the market for a reliable used SUV. I am mainly looking at the 4Runner. The trick is I need the third row seat which is hard to find. I noticed that you can get a 2003 Lexus GX470 well apointed for around $30K.

My question is I figured that the engine and drive train were similar if not the same as the 4Runner since they are both Toyotas. But I noticed that the GX has a manual 4H/4L select and the 4Runner has the electic switch. Also I noticed in Consumer Reports that the drivetrain for 2003 GX was a black dot (bad) and the 4Runner is a red dot (good).

What do you all know

Thanks

John

I tend to overall Not Base my buying power from Consurmer Report as there information can be rather misleading at time Take for example the 00 Tundra which had Red dot's on everything to find a few year's down the road Cr changed there Opinions because of the serious brake problems and vibe issues. Overall I feeL Cr report's are Not judging right when it comes to car's/truck's and there opinions and Information is very much misleading..

My parents have a 2004 4runner. The 2004 model year was the first year for the rear thrid row seats. My parents dont have them but the truck is absolutely flawless. The 4runner compared to the Tundra is a little higher quality....perhaps that is because it is made in the same plant as Lexus vehicles. The paint is of better quality, the leather of the seats is nicer.

My parents have the 4runner v8 limited. I have taken it off road at my dads ranch and it just keeps going and going. Transmission is smooth as it has a 5 speed.

I wouldnt worry about the manual 4lo switch because either the GX or the 4runner will always be in 4hi no matter what you do. For the limited time the truck would be placed in 4lo, you dont have to worry.

We sell quite a few GX's here in the New England area and are customers love them. With very few exceptions, they only come into the shop for normal service. If it matters to you, the GX was also voted 4x4 of the year by 4 Wheel and Offroad Magazine.
