Default HOW-TO: SVH Basics 101 - Engine detailing

Because I have been asked, I am posting some basic details on the setup and install for SVH for our Tundras. The setup is basic, and you are limited only by how much you want to cover or detail in the engine bay. This is for the folks that love to detail their engine bays.

Some options:

Split loom: Easy to apply and cover whatever you want for detail. Easy to install and no removal of any OEM hoses. May require more maintenance over time to keep clean looking due to accordion grooves.

SVH: Requires removal of OEM hoses, but, easy to apply and clean. Adds nice detail as replacement and has better quality than OEM hoses. Many colors available.

First, you can buy the SVH hose here: http://www.hosetechniques.com/

They provide good service and prompt shipping. Browse around and see some of the before and after pics for setups. You get the hose cutter and splitter with your order and color coded wire ties (helps with cut and cover setups). They have kits for the Tacos and 4 Runners. Our Tundras, for now, build your own.

While it may seem too straight forward, here are some basic tips:

. If you are going to dress the lady, she needs a bath before you start. Use your favorite cleaner and method or just go with Simple Green and spray liberally. I do not encourage "high pressure" washes. You can create damage and problems. A simple garden hose pressure will work fine.

. Keep some rubbing alcohol and a lintfree cloth handy. Very handy to clean the hose if you get it dirty.

. Start with the windshield washer hoses and replace them first. Very easy. You have a choice to make at the exit in the fender for this hose. Pull panels to get access to the washer bottle or cut the hose just inside the fender. Install a right angle vacuum fitting and connect the new hose here. That is what I did and looks very clean.

. Only pull off the hoses, especially vac lines, 1 piece at a time. Measure twice, and cut to length once. Install and continue moving on. You do not need any clamps or wire ties, as the hose will fit tight if you are using the right size.

. Caution, some OEM hoses are pre-formed. Make sure you stretch them out to get correct length. Better to add a 1/2" than be 1/2" short.

. Fixed covers (you split the hose) such as brake lines along the firewall require 6 mm.
. The throttle cable, oil dipstick/transmission tubes requires 10 mm. Buy 10 ft.
you will have enough. It will also be used for the short vac hose approx. 10"
long that connects to the back of your stock air box.

Basically, here is what I used: (you will have some extra left over)
. Basic universal kit
. 10 ft. of 6 mm
. 10 ft. of 8 mm
. 10 ft. of 10 mm

Use my pics in my photos for a reference. The OEM stock air box has the same hoses, just a little shorter. I have the AEM intake for now.

Heater hoses and radiator hoses will be replaced with silicone hose in Red when I return home. You can check with Steve at Carson Toyota for availability if you want to go with this next step in detailing. These hoses will last a lifetime. I will post pics when I install. It will cost a lot more, but, you can check out: http://www.coolflex.com/ for another option on heater hose/radiator hose replacements.

If you like detailing, SVH is a good option. You may not go any faster, but, your lady will sure look good when you lift her skirt (hood).

Happy Detailing!
