2005 Tacoma Add lock to bed compartments
This is a quick fix that allow you to lock your rear bed compartments.
This was tested only on my '05 Tacoma X-Runner, but should work perfectly on all other '05 Tacoma's, or others with the same bed compartments. I also assume you could use the same for the inside compartments under the rear seats.
Tools/supplies needed:- Dremel tool, round file, or sandpaper
- Philips screwdriver , to remove the existing lock
- sharp knife, to remove the tab on the existing door
- pliers, crescent wrench. to tighten new lock.
- 5/8" Utility Cam lock - See picture 2 - I purchased mine from my local OSH hardware store for ~ $5.00 - also if they have a good stock you should be able to find a few that are keyed the same.
Steps:- Remove the door for the box you wish to lock
- remove the existing lock using the Philips screwdriver
- Open up the lock hole so your new lock will fit, use the dremel, file or sandpaper. Go a little at a time so you don't make the hole too big.
- remove the small tab on the back of the cover (see picture 3)
- Install your new lock. You will want to install the longer metal tab and lock stops so that the lock stops at the top position and you can remove the key (see the enclosed lock directions) I also used the large washer that came with my lock on the outside of the door, this gave a much cleaner and professional appearance.
- I had to trim ~1/4" from my lock tab and then bend it until it closed and fit snug. You will need to bend, cut to suit your truck. This should only take a few minutes.
- put the cover back, stand back and admire your $5 - 15 minute modification.

Issues/concerns:- This fix is not reversible and if you screw it up you will have to replace the door.
- These locks should not be considered 'high security' as the locks are easily picked, and you also can open the cover with a sharp knife cutting the bottom tabs. So don't keep your 'family jewels' in the compartment and expect them to be there later.
Benefits:
You can actually store things securely in the bed, like those expensive bed tie downs.
