Default Any of you folks hunt or fish?

Wondering if any of you guys (or gals) enjoy hunting or fishing? I try to get out as much as possible (which isn't often now that we have a toddler). Be interested to hear any huntin' or fishin' tales, favorite honey holes (if you aren't afraid to divulge the location) etc.

Unusual for me (in that I almost exclusively fresh water fish)....I went out striper fishing two fridays ago with some buds. We caught about 16 with 11 keepers.

Week before that I was out at Piney Run (up in Carroll County, MD). It was a tough day quantity wise, but I landed my biggest of the year....4lb5oz largemouth. Nothing spectacular I suppose, but it made me happy.

    Can't wait for September 15th

    Have a good one.

    Steve,

I do both...been bird hunting for pheasants several times in NJ and PA and fished just about everything...fresh water lakes, ponds creeks and salt water for striper, fluke....just recently picked up fly fishing with my buddy and we've been going up to the Catskills area (Neversink Gorge, Beaverkill Willowemoc Rivers)....just caught my first trout on a dry fly a few weekends ago on our second trip ever fishing (caught two that day)...what a rush that was! The fluke fishing I used to do was down LBI (long beach Island, NJ) way and there are a ton of places to catch there....off the Barnegat lighthouse, off the Rutgers research center south of Holgate.

I am big time flyfisherman, been up to Alaska for silver salmon, that's about the best fight I have ever had on a flyrod, bent my 8 weight over like my trout rod! I hear the steelheads in NY are like hooking into a torpedo.

Every couple of years, some of my extended family head up to Massachusetts and go Cod fishing in Cape Cod Bay.

Cod is my favorite fish. Yum!

Glad to see a few responses. It's good to know I'm not completely alone. For anyone interested in hunting shows, the new season of Dream Season (from Drury Outdoors) just started. I find it pretty interesting. Airs on the Outdoor Channel Tuesdays at 8:00PM.

Well my first trip of the season will be next weekend. Hopefully the chiggers will be toned down a bit. Lord have mercy on anyone that gets bit up by those (believe me I know first hand).

Anyway I have the bow tuned and ready to roll. I've about shot a hole all the way through the new target I got this year. After not practicing enough last year and having a brain fart with my release on opening day which caused me to miss a deer, I figured it was a good idea to spend more time this year practicing.

Anyway, if anyone cares, I'll post up afterwards and let you know how it went.

BTW, I'm always looking for some new hunting buds in the Maryland area. I don't get out as much as I'd like, but if you are interested in trying to get together, ducks or deer, shoot me a PM.

    Later.

Default Re: Any of you folks hunt or fish?

    Usually hunt moose and deer

Been fishing since I was a kid.

In the fall, I sometimes go with a group of 20 or so friends to fish Walleye on Lake Nippising, which is northern Ontario Canada. We go with a fishing guide, there are small cottages on the lake, and they do everything except provide the fishing rods.

One year, we were out on the lake, not far from shore, when a bad storm rolled in. Rough water is good for catching Walleye, but this was getting pretty rough and it was starting to get dark, and the lake is quite large. The guide tries to start the boat, but it won't start, and it was just rebuilt. We start getting closer and closer to shore, we can't turn the boat into the waves, so we are bobbing around waiting to capsize, and then we notice big jagged rocks under the water. We break out the paddles to push off the rocks, we were getting soaked with rain and waves, the wind was howling like crazy. I started handing out life jackets, because it was a fair swim to shore, but more importantly we'd be jumping into rocks and the boat might clunk somebody in the head. Keeping in mind, this is fall in northern Ontario, so you really really don't want to be in the water.

The guide used his radio to call another boat, but it was almost back to shore, so we waited for about an hour for a tow. Eventually the boat moved away from the rocks, closer to shore, and I was able to jump to shore and pull the boat by a rope to keep it in a better position. The other boat showed up, and we got back to shore without incident.

The previous year, an old guy who had been taking this trip since Jesus was a kid, made a wager. He said "Everybody throws in $5, longest fish of tomorrow's outing wins". I said to him "I'm going to win that money", he just smiled, cuz he knew all the best spots, which bait to use, and most importantly how to fish.

Next day, I spot some grass and shallow water in a cove, I asked the guide to pull into the bay. He said "I doubt you'll find a Walleye in there", but pulled in as asked. First cast, and BAM!, I got a strike. I pulled in a fine Northern Pike (which was in season), and we continued our trip"

You can see where this is going.

That night, each boat reads off how many fish and what size from each person, and I'm last to read. I give my stats last, "Longest fish...38 inches", the old bugger's jaw just about hit the floor. He says "That would be close to a record Walleye" I said I agreed, but it was a Pike, and I held out my hand. He didn't want me to get the money, he said "This is a Walleye trip" and I said "Ya, but Pike are in season, and you didn't specify Walleye, just longest fish".

I got the money, but every year after that, the old boy says quite clear and loud "Longest WALLEYE" lol
    I don't have a penis...anymore

Well....no deer down. Almost ran over a couple on my way to the farm. In any case it was better than working.

Oh yeah, I cut down two deer stands that some poachers put up on my farm. Remembered them from last year and took the bolt cutters with me this time.

Heading out again later this week, but with the muzzleloader instead of the bow. I'll probably at least see some deer this time, because I'll be sitting the field and not in the woods.

Turning out to be a slow year. Haven't even seen a deer yet (while hunting that is).

Of course there's plenty bouncing around my neighborhood, eating my neighbors bushes etc.

I believe they are mocking me.

One night I'm gonna snap and just start plucking em out of the field behind my house. Seven-six-two millimeter. Full metal jacket......

Hey pluslt, I go up to Piney Run all the time, usually just catch a bunch of dinks though. It's a good time though at most of those Carroll County ponds... especially since I finally bought a light flyrod last year, fly poppers are my thing now, at least for freshwater.

I just moved about 1/4 mile from Loch Raven in the last year or so. There's alot of fishing here, just need an electric boat (which i don't have yet) to get to 'em.

I am however all about salwater fishing especially on the Outer Banks. I spend my summers sight casting for Cobias and the fall and spring Drum fishin from the surf (plus whatever else i can get into).

Good to hear BraneDead. I've been down to OBX twice and did some fishing while I was there. Actually it was more of just sitting on the beach drinking beer than anything else. Really enjoyed driving my truck up and down the beach. If I lived down that way, I'd be out there a good bit.

As a follow up to my earlier post. I just got back from what may well be my last hunting trip for the year. Didn't see a damn thing. In fact I haven't seen anything all year. This would be the first time in 7 years that I haven't gotten at least one deer. We may actually be eating beef this coming year.

Hope everyone else has had better success.

The guys over in the Southeast Forum hold an annual meet on the Outer Banks each year. They are already talking about the 2007 meet. You might want to look into it.
