This is a discussion thread titled "DC Overweight ??", within the Mid-Atlantic forum, part of the News and Events category.
A little tidbit for NY buyers ....The 5.7 Dual Cab model can NOT be registered as a passenger vehicle in NY state !!.... My dealer who is a NJ dealer waited till the last day of my temporary registration , to hand me commercial NY plates ... I'm told that it's over by 20 lbs !!...I'm not a happy camper !!.. ...Jim
For those of us that live on Long Island this can be a huge problem!!!!
In this area we have 3/4 of our highway system for "cars" only. They call them Parkways. If the state DMV decides that a pick-up is too heavy it must be registered as a commercial vehicle. If it has commercial plates you can't use it on the Parkway system.
My 02' tundra has no problem with the weight and it is registered as a passenger vehicle. If I was unable to do this I would not buy a Tundra.
If the weight overage is only 20 pounds or so Toyota better address this right away. This would absolutely prevent most truck buyers here from buy the 07'.
Get rid of the Skid Plate and you'll be under weight ........
I doubt it would be that simple. If the DMV has the Tundra listed as having a certain weight, that's what they go with. They don't weigh each vehicle individually.
All a man really needs for happiness in this world is a good woman, a faithful dog, and a big-a$$ed set of tires on his truck.

I wonder if Toyota could have a special edition that would delete something that would drop the weight a bit. It would really cause many people to avoid the Tundra.
The next Tundra I will buy is going to be a double cab, or whatever it is called now. I would have to do something different to aviod the commercial plates
We have just checked with the New York Port Authorities .......... Go to the DMV with your Tundra ( after you remove the Skid Plate ) Request a Exception to Weight Policy for commercial vehicles ...... They will weigh the vehicle and Get you your Regular tags.......... Then you can put the Skid Plate Back on and that will be the last of it.

It probably wouldn't hurt to go with a nearly empty gas tank, and remove the spare tire and tire tools, floor mats, and anything else expendable.

NY regulations state that any vehicle over 5500 lbs will be registered commecially ....The Double Cab 5.7 with the 6.5' bed weighs in at 5520 !!....That's right !!...20 lbs over the limit !!....If you get it with the 4.7 motor you will be at 4465 lbs with the rest of the truck being the same, you can register Passenger !!..Same truck , different motor put's it in a different class !!...... I'm right next to a Parkway !!....I won't be able to use my truck on it !!.... My dealer said that Toyota did not make them aware of this ...I can't believe that an oversight like this could be made by such a large company ????..... .... .....Jim
There has to be someone in the DMV in New York that has an Ounce of Brain that can give you a Exception to Policy .... go down there and Demand your right as a Truck Driver that isn't commerical!!!!! And if that doesn't work ............!!!!!! LOL .... Sorry
