Default Midwest Hunting

Any bowhunters shot anything yet. It's been about 3 weeks into our bowhunting season. Finally got a deer after 3 yrs of not tagging a single deer. A nice doe. So far I have passed up a yearling 8pt and a 2.5yr 8pt. Still waiting for Mr. Big until after Oct. 22 then anything goes. Here in MN, depending where you hunt, we are allowed up to 5 deers. Lets here some stories and/or close calls.

Looks like you've already got "MR. BIG" if your avatar photo is good!

Unfortunately... here in southeastern NC... it's... ALL ABOUT... land leasing fees... PERIOD! And I've basically... paid the "ultimate" price... in enjoyment of the sport, for not having "DEEP" pockets... to pay outragous land lease fees... just for the privilege to hunt. So... since the beginning of last year's season ... I haven't had a place to hunt. I get an invite... every so often, but it just isn't the same as being able to get up and go... whenever and where ever (on a hunting lease of course) you feel like.

Not being a rich man... it's starting to become a true burdon... just to find a place... reasonbly priced... to hunt anymore!

I must admit though... I do love bowhunting! I've only taken one doe with my bow since I started bowhunting about 5 years ago. And I took that deer during my first season of bowhunting. Since then... I haven't even had the chance to "draw" on another deer. Just the nature of the beast... I guess

Best of luck to you this year...

Dave

My avatar is a photo of the famous Mel Johnson buck. My biggest buck to date is a 5" spike, hehe. I've had many close encounters, even drew on a nice 8pt last year but he spotted me and bounded away. Had a monster 10pt just out of range and another 10pt later in the season within range but didn't offer a shot. The list goes on. Frustrating sometimes but well worth it to be out there. Both my dad's 9pt and my little brother's 12pt were shot from the trees I sat in just days before. Talk about timing.

I haven’t been out yet this year, no time. but I plan on going in the next couple weeks. I’ve yet to bag anything with a bow this will be my second year. I’ve riffle hunted for years but am loosing interest, I don’t think the -0 opening morning last year helped any. Anyway I enjoy bow a lot more. I really don’t care if I get anything I just enjoy being out there and seeing them walk by right below my nose.

Good Luck! The 30 point buck is still out there.lol

Default Minnesota Deer Opener

How did you all do? All I got (or even saw for that matter) was a small doe. She was already wounded so it was more of a mercy shot than anything. I am hoping for better luck next weekend. In our party it was the quietest opener I can remember. Too warm I guess.

Anyone have any good (or bad) Deer stories?

My neighbor just got a average sized Doe. Never shot it though. His next door nieghbor hit it in his older Corolla and called him right a way knowing he is a hunter. The inpact was not very hard but hard enough to kill it. The insides of the deer never came out. As soon as the cops got there they isuued my neighbor a Salvage tag and he loaded it into his truck. Sounds like we will have some "Jerky" soon!

Cool NE Opener

The Nebraska firearm season opens this coming weekend ... can't wait. I'll post a pic of the 30-point buck when I bag him .

Our family only bowhunts so we also bowhunt through the gun season. My brother had a nice 3yr old 10pt at 20yds but too much brush to shoot. Nothing during gun season but during our Camp Ripley hunt I undershot a monster 8pt and seen a few other sure wallhangers. At least we're seeing deer.

WELL????? Where is it??!!??

I only got to go out one day. My grandpa was celebrating his 100th birthday Sunday of that weekend. I originally was going to skip it (I mean, come ON! the guy's had 99 of them already, what's the big deal!) and hunt 3 days, but my wife and mother ganged up on my with the guilt trips so I came back home that Saturday night. Didn't see a thing.

Pheasant hunting in central SoDak was not as good as normal either. We go the first week in November every year and for the first time in a LONG time their were still crops in the field, providing a wealth of cover. I did bag six in 4 days, but should have had a lot more than that.

My dad and I are heading back out there 2nd weekend of December.

Still mocking me from the woods! I only got to hunt 3.5 days for the season myself, I was down in Florida all week for work. Opening weekend I got invited up to hunt on some land in north central Nebraska in the Missouri river breaks. Great hunting ground with Mulies and Whitetail, but just too much to cover without adequate preparation. The only deer I saw worth taking was on Friday before opener as I was scouting around. I did get to watch a bobcat prowl around for about 10 minutes or so on opening morning ... that was pretty cool . Last evening, on the in-laws land, I saw more deer in one sitting than I ever have ... probably spotted 40, 25 which were in shooting range, 8 that were bucks, the biggest was a little 120 class 4x4 ... he'll be a nice deer next year. Oh well, muzzleloader season starts in nine days. Check out the deer a guy I work with in Kansas got with his bow. I believe it scored 188 wet.LOOK

Who's got what so far? I missed a nice 8 at the Camp Ripley hunt, another huge 8 just out of range. And close to home, called in a huge monster but he was unwilling to provide a good shot. Other than that I've seen many does and acouple of yearlings and 2yrolds and tagged 2 does.

OK ... so I settled for this guy with the Muzzleloader. Actually, not too bad for the area I took him out of. It's hunted very hard and the deer get pushed around a lot. We just don't have enough area to manage in order for these guys to get a year or two more on them.

Another season of hunting over.
