and the sub-zero weather we can expect this winter? While the amount of snow is always in question we know we'll see sub-zero temps before things turn green again. Personally I think I'm ready with my bag of survival stuff back in my Tundra, can of windshield deicer, long handle scraper/brush (I'm a short dude),sleeve bag of sand/salt, small shovel, rubber slush mats,glycol supplemented washer fluid, new D31M battery, 5W/30 dino, been exercising my 4X4 engagement switch, soaked WD-40 into my under hood heat control cable.
Now, what did I forget?

If a combo of all these whizz bangs met their claims you'd have to siphon gas out of your tank every second day and sell the excess horsepower on the third????
If your engine doesn't consume ANY oil it will seize???

I carry a snow scraper w/ext long handle (I'm not short, just not tall), tow rope, jumper cables, a 10" wide steel farm shovel(plastics ones can't chip away hard packed snow), extra pair of gloves, a hat(hooded mask), some handwarmers, acouple of lighters, magnesium bar with flint(incase lighters get wet), 2 flashlights(with extra batteries) and whatever else. Not only am I ready, I can't wait.

i carry a few items for my self and the Tundra...
-foam snow remover, looks like a 1'x6" flat piece of semi-hard foam with a extendable pole on it- they are sold at Napa and other Auto parts stores
works great for removing 1',2',3'+ of snow at one time (yes we have had over 3' of snow in one night befor in the past)
-couple of warm blankets in the back seat just incase i get crushed by a vehicle and am stuck in the ditch for a while (NYS police drive 2wd Tahoes and Crown Vics.) so emergency vehicles dont get down the road well in bad lake effect storms.
-fold up military style shovel for a possible dig out.
-3 or more snickers bars in the center console (you never know how long you may be out "In It!"
-last but not least.......Cell phone
Now a carry these items for the other folks out on the road that i might need to help....
-jumper cables
-serious duty nylon tow strap (a must for recovering snow stuck vehicles, easy on the drivetrain and gives the extra stretch and pull you need on ice/snow roads, way better than a 3/8"chain)
-4 cell mag lite
-road flares (this reminds me i need to re-up my inventory on these)
Good luck and dont drive to slow! yes to slow, i've seen way more accidents because a slow driver is causing him/herself to be a hazard in the middle of the road.
Look for other vehicles off the road, if you see one "SLOW Down Fast!!!
(dont use your brakes but get off the gas and let the engine slow down the vehicle)
Most winter accidents are caused by people getting over on the side of the shoulder to far and getting caught by the snow/slush and getting pulled in.
If this should happen to you -
HIT THE GAS and turn out of it or you will be pulled in - just dont oversteer to far or you become a 2 ton spinning piece of metal for others drivers to hit.
It looks like we should be getting some snow this afternoon and tomorrow. Fortunately it is happing on a weekend because Minnesotans are notorious for completely forgetting how to drive in snow. After about the second snow fall they seem to figure it out again
Keep em coming I've already seen several items I need or forgot to have in my kit. I have a bed liner in mine and have a 2X8 board across it towards the rear to contain a Rubbermaid tote and misc items. That's where I keep tie downs, tow stuff, jump cables, flares, towels etc. The only item I keep in the cab area is the soft bag with clothes, candles, food stuff and so on. I have a Access Cover and I always keep my tailgate locked to try avoid an unauthorized share program.
