Question What is Michigan like?

I was wondering if some of you who live there can answer a few questions for me. I may be moving there some time within the next year.

1) What is the town of East Lansing like?

2) What is the weather like each season? Having lived in California my whole life I probably have no idea what cold really is, but I'm sure it will be. I'm looking for info on temperature, humidity, is it overcast/gloomy all year, etc?

3) What are the job opportunities like? I'm interested in getting myself into the auto industry in some way. It has always been my dream to do something with cars and business. I'm going to be graduating soon with a degree in Electrical Engineering and a minor in business.

Thanks!
~Eric

I grew up in Michigan went to school in Michigan before I moved to DC back in 90's. I can't speak for East Lansing but I can tell you it's a laid back kind of life in the small towns. Generally speaking people are great.

Weather/Seasons: Let's start with summer. In southern Michigan the weather is pretty good. It's a fair mix of rain and sun with the temps in the high 80's to mid 90's. There are a few weeks that the humidity gets up there but it's not too bad. You can always count on it cooling off in the evening maybe in the 70's. The lakes are great in the summer. Fall is awesome in Michigan. Next to Spring Fall is one of my favorite seasons. The trees changing color, crops being harvested and things starting to cool down with the temps in the 70's and dropping down into the 50's at night. Winter starts pretty much around October/November but in Southern MI you won't see a bunch of snow until December thru March when it starts to taper off the daytime temps are normally around freezing. If you like snowmobiling you will have to trailer your sleds up to Northern MI and even into the Upper Peninsula where the temps are lower and the snowfall greater. If you like fishing you can start ice fishing in January. Spring is great in Michigan. Just when you've had enough of winter spring moves in to remind you that things start over. The grey cold winter is brought to life with the melting of the lake ice and the greening up of the trees.

The Lakes are pretty much fresh water oceans. You can't see the other side and some of the swells can be pretty bad. You have hundreds of miles of shoreline and beaches with lots of small sleepy beach towns coming to life in the summer.

I've been away too long to tell you what the automotive opportunities are like. My brother and brother in-law both work in the auto industry manufacturing parts for Ford, GM and Chrysler. Of course if you want a career in the automotive industry you're going to the right State. I do get grief whenever I go home driving my superior Toyota Tundra. I think their just jealous. Good luck and feel free to PM me with any specific questions and I'll help if I can.

There are several places where you can get demographics on cities or comparisons to your current city. One is Sperlings Best Places and the other search method I use is to punch in the city you're interested in and there'll be several options on the page that offer demographic data. You might try several of them to get all the stats that apply.

If a combo of all these whizz bangs met their claims you'd have to syphon gas out of your tank every second day and sell the excess horsepower on the third????

I have another question. What is commuting in the winter like? Would a 30 mile commute be crazy in the winter? Thanks again for the info.

Commuting 30 miles in most parts of MI shouldn't take much more than 30 mins. To answer your question: It depends how much it snows. You should be ok.
