The 2003 4.7 Liter V8 gets the worst gas mileage ever according to Consumer Reports.

I own a 2003 Tundra with the 4.7 liter V8......

Consumer reports says that in 2003 the 4.7 liter for the Tundras,Sequias, and Land Cruisers was the worst fuel efficient year....Toyota made changes in 2004 and up was much more fuel efficient......

My Tundra get about 12.8 city and 16 highway....The 4.7 liter was introduced back in 1998 for the Land Cruiser and was retired in 2010...The 4.6 replaced it....

Is consumer reports correct? Does anyone have a 2003 (4.7 liter V8) and have noticed how bad the fuel economy is???

I have similar numbers to yours in my 2000. The numbers get a lot better when I can find some real gasoline instead of E10.

i average 13.9 but most of my driving is in baja where 50 mph is the average speed on a 400 mile drive just because of the ****ty road and curves and towns.

scangauge reported 20.3mph to L.A. and back last time so i'm not trippin'. i bought it for the reliability...

I also get from 13-16 or 17 depending on where/how I drive.

Gotta remember, before Hurricane Katrina in August of 2005, gas was $1.79 a gallon, no one gave a shyt about MPG's in those days and 16 or 17 Hwy for trucks was pretty good. Even now, 20 is seen as a bragging number for Hwy MPG.

How is the powertrain of the 2003 different from the 2000-2002? I own a 2002 and typically get 15 mpg city and 15-17mpg highway depending upon how fast I'm going.

I was thinking the different trans with more robust planetary gears drops the mileage a bit from the 00-02s then the engine was upgraded in 04 bringing it back

There was never a problem with the planetary gears. It was a bad metallurgical run of the Torrington needle bearing cages that caused the problems in the early Aisin transmissions.

Properly constructed bearings would have no impact on mileage.

Re: The 2003 4.7 Liter V8 gets the worst gas mileage ever according to Consumer Repor

You are correct I can't find any changes on the 4.7 liter for the Tundra from 2000-2004. But Consumer reports was showing a report on better gas mileage in 2004.......However in 2004 they did come out with the true DBL CAB....In 2005 they updated the 4.7 to VVT-i which created 37 more HP.....up from 245-282.HP..In 2006 it dropped down to 271 HP...Also in 2005 they updated the AUTO Transmission to 5 speed instead of 4 speed.....So Tundras in 2005 might have had the best gas mileage ever for a Toyota Truck equipped with a V8

The 4WD on any year should get less MPG do to the weight.....I don't know the exact weight but it should be over 400 pounds more.

I believe that for 4WD 4.7L Tundras in 2005/2006 were rated at 15/18 as opposed to the non-VVTi 2004 and below which were 13/17.

i stand corrected! in which case, i have no idea what would cause the 03 to get worse mileage...

in reality though, i think you'd be hard pressed to find any difference

Re: The 2003 4.7 Liter V8 gets the worst gas mileage ever according to Consumer Repor

I did get 18 on my trip to Tahoe the other week. Kinda surprised me because of all the extra weight I have on my truck. That was the first time I've checked my MPG's in years. I save myself the headache and its a truck so of course the MPG's suck. I didn't buy it for that, a Civic can't carry 1,000lbs of wood in 4LO with the locker in offroad. Hey, its better than my last truck that got 6mpg on a good day, so I'm happy!
