Default Preparing my Tundra for the Cold!

Hey Everyone,

Im gonna be headed up to Fairbanks, AK next June and I'm getting excited for a change of pace from Tennessee where I've been for the past 4 years. So my big question is, what do I need to take care of on my 2007 Tundra to make sure I dont have any problems once I arrive and the winter hits. I've heard conflicting reports about getting my vehicle winterized in the lower 48 or in AK. Also, I read a post about the block heater that is dry, just wraps around the block, will that suffice for Fairbanks lows. I have a remote starter already, so I think I've got that block checked. If anyone has any other good info I would greatly appreciate. Thanks and looking forward to the great outdoors!

Chuck

Default Re: Preparing my Tundra for the Cold!

Are you ready for Fairbanks? Mentally? I lived in Fairbanks for a little over 6 years, and currently live in Anchorage. Winter in Fairbanks starts in September, and doesn't "end" until late April/May. It is not uncommon to go the entire month of February and not see anything warmer than -30, with a lot of -50 - -60 ambiant temps at night. It's cold...really cold. Generally speaking it doesn't get dark 24/7, but you really only have about 4 hours, during which time it's "dusk".

Anyways, on to your question. I had a block heater (not a block blanket --- don't bring that crap up here, get a real block heater), an oil pan heater, a transmission heater, and interior heater and a battery heater. I had all synthetic fluids in the differentials, and transfer case as well as engine oil.

Make no mistake --- getting something that will "suffice" will not work in Fairbanks, and could put you and your family at risk. Many roads aren't traveled often and a breakdown could cost you your life. Fairbanks is considered the "real Alaska" by many, and it truely is. The cold however, is a small price to pay for the amazing Northern Lights, and solitude that Fairbanks affords. I miss it everyday I have to drive in Anchorage.

PM me if you have anymore questions and I could give you my phone number if you would like to talk in person.
