This is a discussion thread titled "Tow Strap? Chain?", within the Off-Roading forum, part of the General Forums category.
I have 20ft Tow strap (i think its only ment for 5000lbs) Im getting my CM Tundra tommorow. I want something stronger then the tow strap i have now incase i get stuck or a buddy does Off roading.
Any recomendations??? I was thinking about getting a chain and using two Carabiners to hook it up to some tow hooks. Or just getting a chain and getting two I Bolts and using them to hook it up to the hitch receiver or tow hook when someone gets stuck. Any recommendations? I know WARN makes a chain thats 10ft long but its like 60bucks.
Home Depot also has a 12ft tow rope thats meant for up to 10,000lbs and its 30bucks. Anyone ever use it??? Damn tow straps always end up breaking...
Any ideas??? I dont wanna spend too much money and would prefer something light weight (but might just have to keep a chain in the truck bed when i go offroading)
Any other equipment i might want to get that doesnt cost too much???
Ditch the chain. You think straps are bad, you should see what happens when chains cut loose. Pick up one of the HD tow straps from Tractor Supply or somewhere...you should be able to find straps rated up to something like 20K#.
Also, a snatch strap would be better anyway for pulling someone out of mud or snow, vs a non-elastic tow strap...the non-elastic ones are better for spotting, truck wrangling and slow steady pulls like if you need to gently ease someone off a rock pile.
ARB, Black Rat, probably Warn, and others make good snatch straps, and there was a comparison article floating around a year or so ago. They aren't always cheap, but then neither is a Tundra! Don't skimp on this .
x2 on checking tractor supply. I have one of their 3" wide by 30' long straps that i use for towing and snatching. I think it was about $60 but i could be wrong. It is by far the best strap i have ever bought. And i use it all the time. If you can, i would even go with a 4" wide strap just to be safe, because i have had countless smaller straps break on me, and it has left me and my friends stranded on countless occasions.

A REAL truck.
I'll have to see if I can dig up the pictures of what happened to a couple of my friends trucks when a chain broke on them. F'd up the back of a 01 F150 and the front of a 74 AMC Jeep... The worst part is that a piece of the chain about 2 ft long came into the cab of the f150 through the back window, didn't hurt anyone, but came very close to it.
forgot to mention, i would not recommend anything with a built in hook on the end, my friends tailgate was smashed in when one of those cheap wal-mart straps broke. go for one with loops at each end. The one that i said i had from tractor supply has loops on each end.
Its a good thing i posted up and asked. I didnt realize a chain breaking could do that much damage... Dodged a bullet. I wasnt going to get one but a friend was. It could have been me he was trying to pull out!!! for the info!!!
How do the cheaper straps with the Metal hooks damage the vehicle??? i have one and have used it a few times and didnt think the hooks could do any damage since they are already secured to the vehicle.

if the strap happens to break, the metal hooks can come off of the mounting point and slingshot toward a vehicle. My friends tailgate is pretty smashed in from one not too long ago, and it has happened to me and my friends a few times, luckily not doing any damage for the most part.
