Off-RoadingDiscussions specifically related to modifying and driving your Toyota truck/SUV off the pavement, including trip reports.
This is a discussion thread titled "Ultimate Adventure 2008", within the Off-Roading forum, part of the General Forums category.
Do you think you and your 4x4 have what it takes to spend a week off-roading with us next summer? Can your truck go from extreme trail to highway miles all the while being self-sufficient? Can you? Can you handle hanging out with total strangers, camping and wrenching in the dirt, being away from home for almost two weeks, and doing it without whining a single bit? If so, read the following rules and requirements and send your personal and vehicular info with a photo, description, and something about yourself that would be interesting to the group, to 4-Wheel & Off-Road Ultimate Adventure, 6420 Wilshire Blvd., Los Angeles, CA 90048. We need all applications here by March 1, 2008, and we'll let you know if you're chosen by April 1, 2008. As for where Ultimate Adventure is heading next year, that's on a need-to-know basis, and a true adventurer doesn't need to know until it's time to go.
Rules for Ultimate Adventure 2008
¥ No whiners!
¥ We are not responsible for you during this event.
¥ We will use the buddy system so you are partnered with another vehicle throughout this adventure. If you do not find a buddy before the first trail day, we will help you find one. Don't worry about it. We're all friends.
¥ We will try to stick together and help everyone, but with a group of this size, it will not always be practical to delay the group for one or two people.
¥ Only one vehicle allowed per invitee, and only two people per vehicle.
¥ Vehicles must be driven (not towed) on the entire Ultimate Adventure.
¥ Vehicle may be towed to repair location-the intent of the no-trailer rule is to enforce the pavement portion of the adventure.
¥ The group will leave as close as possible to posted times-don't be late or you may be left behind.
¥ Bring overnight gear with your trail rig (sleeping bag, food, water, and so on) for unplanned situations-don't depend on a support vehicle or trailer along the way.
¥ Participants are responsible for all of their own expenses (food, lodging, fuel, repairs, fees, and other expenses).
¥ No pets and no children under 18 years old on the event.
¥ You are considered a representative of 4-Wheel & Off-Road magazine, as well as an adult, and a representative of the four-wheeling community as a whole. It is important to hold yourself to the highest standards of behavior as we are on display to the entire nation. We expect you to behave accordingly.
¥ Alcohol consumption will not be tolerated on trails or any time you are driving. Passengers may not drink on trails. Violators will get one verbal warning; the second offense removes you from the Ultimate Adventure.
¥ Illegal drug use will not be tolerated any time during the tour. There is no warning-first offense gets you removed from the Ultimate Adventure.
Sponsorship
This is a 4-Wheel & Off-Road event designed to entertain our readers and offer promotional value to Ultimate Adventure sponsors. In order to protect the marketing value, Ultimate Adventure offers to its sponsors, only official sponsor's lettering and/or logos are allowed to be displayed on the Ultimate Adventure vehicles. Your vehicle must be stripped of all lettering/logos not part of the Ultimate Adventure. You will be supplied with logos from the sponsors should you wish to run them, as well as Ultimate Adventure logos for your vehicle which must be applied.
Vehicle/Driver Requirements
There will be a tech inspection at check in. Your vehicle will be inspected for all of the following equipment and paperwork. You will not be allowed to join Ultimate Adventure if your vehicle fails this inspection.
¥ Vehicle must be street licensed and insured, and driver must have a valid driver's license, current registration, and current proof of insurance.
¥ Front and rear lockers (limited slips do not suffice)
¥ Must be self sufficient (bring your own spares, tools, jack, and trail food)
¥ Winch
¥ Rollbar (rollcage preferred)
¥ First-aid kit
¥ Seatbelts for all occupants, worn at all times
¥ Adequate tow-strap/winch attachment points front and rear
¥ Battery hold down
¥ 35-inch minimum tire size
¥ Working CB
¥ Fire extinguisher
¥ Tow strap
¥ Jack
Projected Dates
Each year we shoot for the last two weeks of June. This will require you to be ready to start the event within this time. Ample time will be given to make preparations for hotel and trailer arrangements, but this is an adventure and as such dates and locations are subject to change.

List of Mods: 3" PA Body Lift, 3" BDS Suspension, 4.5" TC Lift= 12" of Lift, 35's, Mickey Thompson Classic Lock II 16x10, Cold Air Intake, Throttle Body Spacer....
Custom bumper with winch, ARB Rear locker, 4.88 gears.......
Dunno if the IFS rigs could push through some of that terrain with the 35"+ tires required ...certainly not with the front locked, unless you're carrying a lot of spare CV joints.
Well, maybe mine several years down the road if the build goes where I want...
I think Jonathon would be the only one to qualify as he had the roll cage part completed. I don't think any of the other SAS guys has one. I'm also missing the winch part.
Yeah, it's pretty crazy. It's difficult to build a rig capable of running tires that large, on equipment that heavy and a cockpit that spartan, and still be able to comfortably run it on the highway.
There are a few rigs on PBB that can do it all, but it takes very close attention to detail and a very high quality build.
It would be fun following them on an ATV when there off road. There should be a clearance limit, angle of approach decrease limit.
A truck with 35's is nothing special. A Jeep/FJ with 33's is so much more capable.
Also lockers in the rear and FRONT? the set up they require is really hardcore. I wish i had a vehicle that could qualify!

I had planned to get a rear locker this spring. If I had that, I'd still fail the roll bar, front locker, and 35's. I run 33's with rear LSD and no roll bar, but otherwise qualify. Darn. That would be a bunch of fun, and perhaps a ticket to further events and sponsorships.

Fun? Yes, but bring lots of cash and credit cards for the inevitable carnage...
To succeed and actually have fun (instead of worrying about the bill) you need sponsorship for this event for the vehicle and the extensive logistics required. This game costs big bucks to play.
Too bad they dont have something that a regular Joe could compete in with, say, a bone stock 89 Toyota pickup and actually have a real chance of winning. A challenge thats not so rig and budget biased where driver skill meant more than how much you spent on custom fab and axles...

Me too!
Thanks again for your service to our Country, both for those of us who care and from those idiots who don't appreciate the freedom they have, nor it's price.

I've been an avid reader of Petersen's for years and have almost all of their Ultimate Adventure Video's. It's funny too how my 5 year old son can name all of the Mag's staff and their vehicles but has no clue who Tom Brady or Bret Farve are. Anyhow, their trips are really hard core but they all seem like a great group of guys who are pretty down to earth. I think that JJC's truck could do it no problem and would love to see a Tundra on there.
You guys are close to getting me into some deep sh*t! Looks like I've made the top ten cut. They still have to cut the applicant's to the final 5 so I seriously doubt I will make it in, but I thought it was pretty cool that the old Tundra made the top 10 out of however many applicants there were......maybe there were only 11 applications.....bah ha ha ha!
