This is a discussion thread titled "sh**!! mud bogging gone bad.", within the Off-Roading forum, part of the General Forums category.
i was out having fun with some friends today doing a little mudding when i got in a little to deep. I hit a rut and got shot right into the middle of the pit with water over the air intake. then the water decided to come in and reached the top of the front seats. I never though i would be sitting in water while trying to drive. Took about 3 hours to get it pulled out between a dodge ram with the big HEMI(had to much power and did nothing but spin the tires) and a tocoma(did alot better job then the hemi. could have gotten me out if it had 4wd or was a little heavier). Got it out and let i sit for a little then pulled the plugs, kicked over the engine to get the water out, checked the oil(supriszingly had no water in it), put it back together and *bam*. i think i broke a rod but it didnt knock a whole in the block so mabey if im lucky it is fixable. Does anyone know how much a 4.7L V8 used or new would cost? Ill try to put pictures up tomorrow while i begin tearing apart the interior.

When you get water in the cylinders, you should pull the plugs and turn the engine by hand to get the water out. If you used the starter with the plugs pulled, it's likely you bent a rod. If this is the case, DO NOT start the engine as it could cause severe damage. You can usually repair an engine with this type of damage with a lower end rebuild (bearings & rods). Heck you could go ahead a bore her out a little while you’re in there to gain a few more CI.
IIRC a new 4.7 from Toyota will run $13K retail and $11K if you beg.

the answer is to use the internet to find a low mileage 4.7 pulled out of a wrecked tundra.. I saw one on ebay that ad low miles and it was only 1600... its not brand new.. but its also not 13 grand..

All a man really needs for happiness in this world is a good woman, a faithful dog, and a big-a$$ed set of tires on his truck.

man that sucks! sorry to hear about it. i did the same thing with my 85 toy 4x4. had water up to my seats. it fried my alpine amp. i was luckier than you i didnt do any damage. after we got it out we drained the fluids and changed them all. we fired her up and she was fine. guess it was my lucky day. if it were me i would pull the motor (if you are mechainically enclined enough to do so) and pull the pan. maybe you will get lucky and you can put bearings in it and maybe throw a new connecting rod in her. if not i would then go the used motor route. 10-13 grand is a lot of cash to throw in one of these for an engine. good luck with what ever you do and keep us up to date.

I'm assuming that he did this by hand per his original message. Though he didn't elaborate on the kicking it over.....
I sure hope so for his sake. That has to suck!

Sorry to hear about your loss. I guess off-roading & mudbogging isn't covered in anyone's insurance policy, as that is considered intentional abuse/misuse by the insurance companies. I wonder if any aftermarket company makes a "snorkel intake" (reaching above the roofline) to fit a Tundra?
Oh,..."submarine activities" mine have been limited to one dumb accident back in the seventies. Here is the true story I told on the another forum many moons ago:
Have no submarine water stories to tell about my past Toyota trucks, luckily, but do have one about an old clunker Dodge slant-six station wagon (with the push button auto-trans selector on the left side of dashboard).
Had been driving all night in Oregon in about 1975, along the Columbia river headed east, picked up a few backpacking hitchhikers for company and to drink a few beers, got off the expressway exit at a local picnic park to take a piss, we all got back in the wagon, and I start driving down a long black straightaway that looked to me like the freeway entrance. OOOPs!
Wrong direction or I was disoriented or drunk....at the end of the straightaway was a little dip and a puddle (or so i thought ....it being pitch black out). Turns out it was a boat launch entrance, no signs or chains, just two yellow lines leading into the Columbia river!
We all jumped out as I yelled "get out fast", then we shivered all morning until the park rangers came and got their rowboat out, and a long pole to poke around underwater. They called a towtruck, and I jumped in the water to place the winch cable hook up to the rear springs, which was at least 10-12 feet underwater, quite a breath holding exercise! First thing I saw when we opened the door of the Dodge was tons of water and beer cans flowing generously to the ground.
I went with the towtruck driver to junk the old Dodge slant six (original cost $99) at a junkyard, then hitched and took a bus the rest of the way of my adventures out west.
And the hithchikers? After apologizing and laughing about the stupid accident, we all found a local laundromat so we all could dry out our clothes and belongings!

ended up trying to drain the rest of the oil today and it was full of water. the little bit we checked last night looked good. So changed the oil and pulled the plugs on it. turned it over and used a shop vac to suck out the water. did this for several minutes drained the oil and repeated. Then got under to drain the oil the 3rd time and there was a whole in the block. so it looks like a new engine or atleast a shortblock. they have some decent deals on ebay though so hopefully i can get out of this deal under 5 grand with a used engine. But the truck is 4 wheel drive and would not have tried this if it wasnt.

Sorry to hear for your loss. Hopefully everything will work out. Tell the insurance company it fell in a ditch full of water.... Wonder if it will work.
You did fall in a water hole...
