This is a discussion thread titled "4 Low Over-Heating Issues", within the Off-Roading forum, part of the General Forums category.
Does anyone have issues? Whenever I am in 4 low or 4 double low my engine overheats rather quickly. It did this a few weeks ago so I cleaned out the radiator, but there was hardly any mud caked in the fins. Last night, it started over heating again. Anyone have any ideas or encounters like this?
its possible that your radiator is old, and it overheats easily
I had that issue, when i've replaced my radiator (about $120) - since then never had issues.

Have you ever actually flushed the rad? Things might just be gunked up by now including your water pump...or thermo. You could try replacing that or just the rad from a junk yard or something. Maybe the lack of moving air over the rad could be causing a problem.
Or it could be due to the underdrive pulley not spinning the water pump fast enough...which both you and I have

I was thinking about the under drive pulley part, but it has never happened since my truck was SAS'd. It happened once about 2-3 years ago and a muddy radiator was the culprit. And now all of a sudden its doing it again.

Huh. How many miles are on your truck? How does the fluid look? My only guess is maybe the radiator is a little clogged up possibly from circulating contaminated water/coolant. It might just be time for a new radiator. You might be able to pick one up for really cheap at a junk yard from a newer year Tundra and swap it out.
I'll ask my buddy tomorrow what he thinks it may be since he is actually a mechanic. Until then maybe check to see how the fluid looks.

It sounds like the thermostat. My brothers 02' did this about a month ago, we replaced the thermo for about ~$30 and its all good now. If you want, pull the thermo out and place it in a bowl of hot water it should open up at around 180 degrees if i remember correctly. Is your fan coming on? Try the thermo first then go from there. Good luck.

about 59k on the truck. the coolant looks pretty clean when i checked it the other day. New fluid and a radiator flush will be the first order of business.

Thanks, I will look into that also. I am rarely in 4 low, so I am not too worried about it. As long as it doesn't start doing this under normal driving conditions, I will be good.
