I've been trying to find some info on tire gatebumpers.
Does any one know who makes a reasonably priced tiregate bumper that's worth it?
But what i was thinking of doing was building my own tiregate bumper.
i wan't something like the one in the link but im not 2 into the square pipe on the sides.
if its possible (and im sure it is with some well placed thought into it)
to be able to fold the gate down like u do a traditional tail gate, for when im hauling stuff and it sticks out the back. and i wanna be able for it to swing out like a gate like on jeep, left to right or right to left.
i mean basically all u would have to do its have a doubble hinge on both sides of witch direction your swinging the gate. and have like pen locks to determine which direction the gate is swinging.
any one have any ideas or reccomendations?
like what size piping or anything else that may make it work better.

Anything is possible with some fabrication skills. If you want top of the line stuff try demello offroad. I havent talked to him in a while, but he may still be doing custom stuff. He got his start working on tacoma's. He has built some really high quality custom stuff....

Some suggestions...

Choose swinging or folding. Swinging is by far easier, because folding means you gotta fold down the weight of the tire. The OEM tailgate weighs 50# with LineX, a large offroad tire can weigh 100# mounted.

If you want to use a pin rather than a clamp, you'll need positive engagement and double shear on both bushings to keep it from flopping. Poly bushings, a ramped engagement slot, and a big pin with a cotter hole should do the trick I would think.

I would use 11g 1.75OD...tires are heavy. I like how the setup in the picture supports top and bottom of the carrier.

Sketch up a few ideas and take them to a local shop. I doubt you'll convince anyone who's not local to build you something like this, Tiregate has been awful cranky about people potentially infringing on their copyright.

You'll find many examples of swingout tire carriers on the Expedition Portal, people run them with their OEM tailgate. If you do a dual swingout mounted to a bumper, you can put the tire on one side and a jerrycan on the other. It'd be awkward to haul long material tho, you'd have to remove both swingouts.
