Default Smokeysevin's 4Wheel drive conversion buildup thread.

Alright everyone I went to the beach today with some friends and was very luckey to make it out with my truck still dry, I was returning my jetski to the trailer and my truck got stuck. well the tide was coming in and it got up to nearly the trim on the door before I was rescued. Needless to say I'm a little freaked out right now so to prevent this from ever happening again I'm going to do some sort of 4 wheel drive swap weather it be solid axle or factory toyota. either way I'll be runnign 33s for probably 2 years and then 35s

SAS
should I do the solid axle swap i would be going 9 inch rear 44 front with a divorse mount transfer case dana 300 or 205. I'm thinking I will just buy a bronco or blazer with the solid front axle and strip it.

IFS
If I go the IFS route it will be less custom fab but I need to swap the tranny which is not what I really want to deal with.

Comments, thoughts, ideas, suggestions, anything will be help.

Sean

Read jjc's and apimpdad's build threads and decide if you really wanna go that route. Personally, I wouldn't do the D44 front or the dv-mount case. You're gonna sink a bunch of money in to this route, in part because it's not something you can do yourself yet.

Time consuming but not difficult to swap for stock IFS, if that's what you want.

Some choices you gotta make...

T-case:
Electronic or simple transfer case?
4WD or AWD?
Driveline disconnects?

IFS:
Manual or ADD hubs?
Stock or extended front suspension travel?

SAS:
Width?
Center?
Knuckles?
Housing?
Suspension?
Rear axle?

General:
Gear ratio?
Lockers?

You could also just make the switch to 35"x12.5" tires now, and air down more...12# and all-terrains should get you around on the beach just fine.

T-case:
I'm thinking something either stock toyota or dana 300 or np205 or np241
IFS:
Manual hubs
suspension with my bilstein 5100s and camburg uppers

SAS:
Width stock or just a little wider
Center I'm not sure what you mean by that
Knuckles stock or d60
Housing dana 44 or ford 9
Suspension leaf spring
Rear axle ford 9 or 10.25

General:
Gear ratio 4.56
Lockers arb or lsd for rear lsd for front

Correct me if I'm wrong but SASing a 2wd requires more than just putting a straight axle under the truck (besides fabwork etc) Does the computer or tranny have to be touched?

Also, didnt you say you had to be able to fit under your parking garage?
