Thumbs up Off road training class led by Bill Burke.

Well I'm going to have a little time on my hands in late May so I've decided to sign up for one of Bill Burkes 'On the road...' 4x4 training classes. This one will be held on Saturday, May 30th and Sunday May 31st in the Pike National Forest, roughly southwest of Denver. We'll be starting out by meeting at a 4x4 shop in Englewood on Saturday morning, then heading out to the forest. The class is limited to 8 vehicles and I believe I'm the fourth to sign up. I've always wanted to have some kind of formal training and this opportunity has presented itself.

4x4 Training Classes with Bill Burke (scroll down the web page to General description of On the Road...to see what's covered)

Anyone else interested in attending?

There may be a few people from this area, attending...give a call when you're in town, there will likely be a bunch of people willing to run some trails outside the class.

Will do. I'll probably take I-80 most of the way out, but I may expand my time away and visit a cousin in Casper, WY first. A slight detour. Then attend the weekend class, then return via I-70 and working my way towards Salt Lake City and back home via I-80 again. But wait! Isn't that Moab just south of I-70? I'm sure I would want to try out some of new mad skills on the trails! Hmmmmm. Man, this trip is gonna cost me with the Mrs.

Exactly! I get the same mag. I contacted the 'Dirty Toy School' and they replied they don't have anymore classes lined up for 2009 due to the economy. The referred me to Bill Burke's web site and that's all she wrote!

I hope to have a blast and perhaps meet up with some of the Colorado boys while I'm in town.

We're going to Moab the week after that, if you want to join us.

Default Re: Off road training class led by Bill Burke.

Well I've done a few more mods to my truck to make my upcoming trip more enjoyable and safer. I bought and installed a Clarion CX 609 head unit that has integrated Blue Tooth and will play music from a USB flash drive. I bought a 16 gig drive and I've only just started to load it with music. I may not hear the same song twice on the entire trip! The Blue Tooth works extremely well! I installed the microphone at the top of the 'A' pillar and the voice of the person I'm calling comes out of the speakers nice and clean. I'm very happy with the new head unit.

I also pulled the old spark plugs out and replaced them with NGK Iridiums. Several of the old plugs were barely finger tight in the socket! A number of the electrodes were noticebly worn and the gap was too big. Man, I guess it was time! Normally I do a better job of keeping track of things like this. The ol' gal runs soooo much better now! Nice and smooth. Maybe I'll even see a little gas mileage improvement. Anything would help at this point.

I also tracked down and fixed some minor exhaust leaks coming from the exhaust system. Some of the bolts had backed out between the sections. Tightened those sucka's back down and she sounds much better now.

Next up is replacing the rear diff fluid with some new stuff. I'm not doing synthetic here due to the possibilty of leaking past the axle seals. The earlier 1st gen Tundra's axle seals were not designed for synthetics. I know people are running synthetics in their rear diff's, but I'm not taking the chance, especially with such a long drive (1,200+ miles each way) coming up soon. I am going to replace the front diff fluid with Royal Purple synthetic since there are no axle seals to worry about. I changed the engine oil and filter last month, so they are fine. Plus I installed a new air filter.

I also replaced the original steel winch line with Amsteel Blue synthetic line (3/8" by 125'). It weighs about 35 lbs less then the steel line, is 45% stronger and is substantially SAFER than steel and is recommended by Bill Burke himself. Can't go wrong there. I also bought his two DVD's: Getting UNStuck and Getting PREPared. Just a little homework.

I put on new Toyo Open Country M/T's last December and they only have about 3,000 miles on them. So they are good to go.

I also noticed that she pulls slightly to the right, so I'll take her in for an alignment next week.

Then I will take her over to my Toyota mechanic buddy and have him give her the once over regarding belts, hoses and other misc. stuff.

Other than actually packing for the trip, the ol' Tundra is just about ready. Whew!

The trip has begun! I left my home this morning at 7am local time and drove some 630 miles to Salt Lake City, UT. It took me about 10 1/2 hours with just a couple of stops. I have a motel room for one night, than I leave in the morning for Casper, WY to stay with my cousin and her husband until Friday afternoon. Then on to Englewood, CO which is just to the south of Denver. So far, so good!

Right on! Hows the weather been so far? Are you pulling your trailer? Have fun.

The weather's been great! No problems whatsoever. I arrived yesterday (about a 7 1/2 hour drive from Salt Lake City) in Casper along with some scattered thunder showers with hit and miss rain cells. Today I learned how to operate a John Deere 110 backhoe and front loader. Then rode around on my cousin's 4 wheeler. They have 13 acres of land so plenty of places to ride. I even 4'wheeled my truck to the top of their property. Good times! No trailer this time, that would have been too much! Tomorrow I head down to Englewood, CO. It's been a great trip so far.
