Default Reworking Intake

So, I'm getting tired of digging mud out of my airbox.....but do not want a snorkle. I did the deck plate mod for in the unfortunate event that I have to go through really deep water/mud, but for everyday 'wheeling I my tire seems to be a great shot at filling the factory intake under the fender with mud. At first I thought about putting screen over it, but that would probably load up too easily. My other idea is to rotate the factory intake elbow under the fender 90 degrees so it's pointed up, instead of pointed back right at my tire.

Has anybody done any mods to the actual intake elbow?

Great minds must think alike because I have been wanting to re-do my intake without doing a snorkel! Anyways, I put a wire mesh screen on my intake a few months back, and your right, it just got caked up and when it dried it made it so little to now air was getting it.

Here was my idea....

Get some type of tube or pipe (PVC or some type of plastic flex pipe) and run it from the factory intake part of the intake box that is in the fender, and run the other end of the pipe or whatever up to the higher part of the fender and running some sort of shield around it. I have had this idea forever, but theres just too many other things that I wanna do before this, even though it should be on the top of my list.

Here is an example. (yes I know the intake is on the passenger side, but you get the idea)

Yeah, that was my plan if "spinning" the elbow up doesn't do the trick. Problem with mine is that the tire will stuff so far into the fenderwell I'm afraid any additional pipe will get hit.....or make that suddenly removed !

Hmm, it looks like you may have enough room in that pic, but I know how you are and how your truck flexes so there's no telling. The only thing that worries me about just spinning the elbow is that the mud will just fall into it if its real thick. (Now that I think about it, I don't even have that elbow, just a straight inlet piece)

Yeah, you're right - I meant I was planning on adding an elbow. I'm thinking if you point the elbow up and slightly forward it would be hard for mud to get into it?

From that picture, it looks like the tire will clear it, but the trees might not .

Pimp's idea is pretty much was I was talking about earlier. As long as the end is turned down, and there's a shield between it and the tire, it shouldn't pack up and gunk won't sit at the bottom, either.

I think that would work JJC, just adding an elbow and doing what you stated. I think I am designing my intake not necessarily to keep mud out of the intake, but just to be safe when crossing water because I do cross some very very deep water. Whatever you decide to do, post pics and let us know how it works.

yeah.......so last night I found this black intake duct that I had bought from Advanced Auto during the UA (in case we were forced to do any deep water manuvers), jammed it into the factory intake, gooped on a tube of black RTV, threw the other end of the tube on top of the inner fender liner, and called it an evening......damn apimp - are you a mind reader ?!

Haha looks like we are on the same page! I think I may try to use some PVC if I have any extra laying around. But, it looks good and it sure is better than having to dig mud out.

I thought about trying PVC, but I don't think there's enough room between the factory intake duct and outer fender to get a 3" 90 degree elbow in......
