Default Lift Kit Confusion?????

Ok. I was all set with what I needed to do my lift. I was planning on running Bilstein 5100 adjustables with rear add a leafs with a one inch diff drop and BVP bracket. Then I read this thread, and my head started to spin. Tundra Offroad Mods and Tech.

All sorts of complications seem to be involved in even a modest 2.5" lift. Ball joint failure, torn cv boots, alien invasions, etc. My question is, do I need camburg uca's? Do I need new boots? I don't plan on off roading this rig anytime soon, I am just trying to make it more off road worthy so that I can handle the large amounts of snow and mud we get in the Adirondacks. Basically, I just want a moderately off road worthy truck. No rocks or bogs, but something with a little more clearance to be able to handle some of the lesser maintained dirt roads (if you could call them that).

I have a 2000 Tundy Access cab with 127K miles, TRD off road, tow pkg, and BFG All terrains.

Sorry for the long post, but it's really frustrating when you think you're all set, and then another set of hurdles are flung forcefully in your direction.

Thanks in advance,

A confused Pirates712

You will be fine with the setup that you stated that you are getting. New UCA's would be nice but they are not a necessity and your boots should be fine with the diff. drop.

So I shouldn't have any premature ball joint failure? Thanks for your help!

do the diff drop and use hose clamps to clamp over the fact ones and you should be ok.

Maybe I should go look over what I wrote in that thread ...

Most of what's there is things to be aware of, not necessarily things that will happen to you.

The lift you have selected is simple, maintenance free, and effective. Don't bother buying the diff drop. I've simply been too lazy to remove mine. The more I stare at it, the more I doubt it's doing anything useful...tho if I cycle the suspension and find locked joints in a full lock turn, and establish that the diff drop makes a significant difference, you'll hear about it here. As it is, it makes less than half an inch of difference in position at the output from the front differential, so honestly I wouldn't worry about it if I were you.

Do the CV boot mod, it's very simple. Hose clamps on both sides of the inner CV boot (don't overtighten), hose clamp on the inboard side of the outer CV boot, and slightly tighten the outboard side of the outer CV boot clamp. Mind you don't overtighten and split the boots.

Given your stated use, I don't expect much else will ever be necessary. Make sure you follow the alignment instructions which you'll find around here, and you should be fine. Don't worry about upper control arms, don't worry about upper ball joints. Neither situation should apply to you with that setup.

Run a 265/75/16 tire, studded or not as you need it, and you'll have a truck which handles well, tires that fit properly, gearing which is appropriate for the tires, and slightly improved clearance.
