Default New rock sliders

Ever since I purchased a tube bender, I've been going crazy with the mods. In my photos section I just posted pics of my homemade sliders. They attach at five points on each side. Presently they are not mounted, they are being Rino-linings coated in black. Also having the roof rack done in the same rino material.
Actually we went crazy with the rino stuff, sprayed the whole roof in sunfire red material, 1/4" thick. That area will forever sit under that rack, so washing it will be a real chore, and there was the possibility of things falling through the floor of the rack and gouging the roof. While I was at it, I had the body side sprayed with the same sunfire red coating from the side molding down ward from the front wheel flare to the rear wheel flare. Will post pics when I weld the sliders on.

Nice!!! Definitely post pics when they are welded on. I plan to have round/square tubing used when I get mine done.

Sorry I'm late posting, a little minor surgery yesterday. The square/round tube idea is a good one, I think Slee is doing that, and it would make the manufacture much easier. Coping the ends of the tubing is a laborous task. With square tube you just get the angle and cut. I did hydraulically push up the rocker lower seam in four places to get a little more clearance, hate loosing precious ground clearance.
The coating is complete, should have them welded on in a couple days, will shoot pics then.

Yes you do! I had the same pipe bender you bought for the past 6 years. No comparison between that and a tube bender. Mine is a model 3 from van sant enterprises. Purchased 1.75", 3/4", and 1" dies. You will find the dies are the most expensive part. I just discovered the 1 3/4" die will bend 1 1/4" pipe very nicely! Tube comes in various thicknesses, but that inexpensive sch 40 pipe is .144" thick, read that as good stuff...just a thought...

I bought a cheap $79 hydraulic pipe bender from Harbor Freight and it has worked great. It is designed for Schedule 40 pipe though - dies would probably fit a little loose for DOM. I am running out of stuff to fab on my ride.....Oh, except that flat bed I've always wanted . Your sliders look great, the ones I built give me a good piece of mind on the trails.

Just wait until you get a tube bender, you'll be amazed at the difference!

Hey, I found your post on the rack you made for your truck and had some questions. First great looking rack..I will have to admit though that I do not have a Tundra, I currently own an Excursion, but I like the Tundras!!! I am currently trying to fashion a 65" x 50" x 7" rack for the beast. Sure I could just go buy one but what's the fun in that? Thanks for the idea from harbor freight and the tube bender, we have a northern tool here that carries the same thing 12 ton with dies. I am a complete newbie to metal working but am quite mechanically inclined, bare with me.. You mentioned the schedule 40 tubing. Where do you get it? Same stuff that Home Depot has? What size did you use to make yours? I am not an accomplished welder, YET.. Can you point me to a setup I could use without spending a ton of cash and accomplish good results?
TIA

A couple of things here. The rack was not bent using one of those harbour freight benders, I'm not sure it, well, I know it could not do the same job. I owned one of those benders for years, it only has one set of dies with only one radius possible and it puts nasty little dimples in the pipe. I use a true tubing bender which can handle pipe or tube, does a correct job, nice bends.
The sch 40 pipe comes from a steel supply company. Find yours locally and think about 1 1/4 or 1 1/2 sch 40 pipe or if you have the tubing bender, get actual tubing. I used .75" X .63 wall for the sides and 3/4" square 16 gage for the bottom.

Coop-

If you go w/ the pipe bender make sure you use black steel pipe and not the galvanized stuff. HD has both kinds- the zinc in galvanized pip will result in weaker welds. The BP has a urethane coating that you will need to sand off before you weld. I have found that the 1" pipe bends very nicely to 90o. Did not have good results with the 3/4" stuff as it kinked when I got close to 75o. Havent tried anything larger yet

Wow, good information. I actually was thinking of going with a smaller diameter tubing for the rack say 3/4" or even square tubing all arond.
Here's a link on ebay that got me thinking about doing this myself..

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...RK%3AMEWA%3AIT

This seems like a great rack and not a bad a price, but half the fun is making it yourself. This looks as if its made out of 3/4" square tubing with 1" on the bottom. My biggest issue is where to get the metal and what type of welder to use to put it together. I'm not so concerned with making the nice bends as I can always just butt them together. Do you think a small cambell hausefeld mig welder could tackle a job like that?
Thanks again!

The small 110VAC migs work fine on small jobs. If you plan to do anything larger in the future, better to go to a 220VAC unit. I use a Hobart Handler 175.

Not to argue, but actually my Harbor Freight bender has about six different size shoes 1/2" - 2"(?) and has multiple settings for different radius bends and is specifically for Sch. 40 pipe - it will not work with DOM because it will dimple it, but that works out well since I can get all of the seamless schedule 40 A106 I want for free (a perk of working for a $100M+ mechanical contractor - maybe the only one though ).

Mine had the 6 dies also. I purchased the 16 ton model and used it like you to bend 1 1/4 and 1 1/2" pipe. The dimples I'm referring to were made by the black steel rollers that fit in either end of the die. For some reason when i moved the rollers inboard, I suppose it created too much local pressure on the pipe and would push in 1/4" deep dents when I really started bending deeply.
For sure, though, a tube bender does not do any of that. B U T, given the cost of a tube bender, I can see the sense a pipe bender makes. Curiously, though, I have converted back to bending only sch 40 pipe. My 1.75" tube die bends 1.25" pipe just fine. If you look at the rear bumper i just built, the round stuff is 1.25" sch 40 pipe.
