I take it fire extinguishers arent carried on those rigs. Considering help is a long ways away I would think a farmer would make that a requirement on every vehicle and equipment that has the potential for creating fire. Could have stopped the fire before it had a chance to cause severe damage. A 5 lb fire extinguisher should be plenty. Or go for broke (literally) with a 150 lb'er ($4300). One of my recommendations are the Amerex products. From personal experience they are worth the $.

My folks for the longest time didnt have a extinguisher in their home. F'in crazy, border line stupidity, if you ask me. I gave them a nice one as a present. Even if you have no clue on how to use it, having one is better then nothing. It would suck watching your house go up in flames just because a candle tipped over, or a grease fire caught on. Having the right type and size of course is important too.

Stay away from those crappy Kiddie extinguishers. Go with Halon or a equivalent.
And a needle with thread pre-threaded. Seems a lot of farm folks lose limbs.

Its because there's nothing to do in farm country, just farming and drinking, but unfortunately they do both at the same time.

I was watching a program where this teenager got his arms ripped off by a PTO, then walked to the house, opened the glass sliding door and called 911. Luckily they were able to sew his arms back on.

My friend wasn't so lucky. He was working beside a manure spreader, it cut his arm off above the wrist. The old farmer he was working out started to pass out. My friend drove himself to the hospital because the farmer couldn't do it.

Actually, the 1990 and newer models are required to carry halon systems and a portable one beside the cab. Remember, this is a 1987, so its 20yrs old.

I wouldnt be relying on whats required or not by state or farmers law etc, common senses goes a lot further.

I know that, I didnt mean anything towards you.

Unfortunately not having emergency equipment is one of those things that are just overlooked, until it happens. Its not just farming either. Many people do not have any equipment in their vehicles, not even basic hand tools. It would suck being stranded somewhere just because you dont have a screwdriver to fix a loose hose. Or it would really suck to survive a plane crash, but die because you lacked a jacket, water or whatever to survive the night. Its things that most of us overlook...

i'm a 100% city boy but i watched bonanza, city slickers, and idled john wayne growing up. this is a travesty no matter what circle you're in so count on a few more bucks from sunny southern california. who knows.....maybe his wheat is what made my toast this morning.

i agree on the emergency preparedness. it is so often overlooked.
