This happened the other day when this farmer was harvesting some summer wheat. This combine was a 1987 CaseIH 1460 Axial Flow. He was harvesting and a bearing caught fire inside the combine where the wheat is separated from the trash. All that was very dry and naturally caught fire and he drove the combine to the edge of the field until it was in a safe place. This is a total loss piece of equipment, it was worth about $50,000.
It's a sad day for CaseIH fans everywhere

damn! just damn! Knowing how tight a farm budget is, that is a hard loss...especially when you need to be harvesting.
Even if he has insurance, he's bound for a lot of loss, because to harvest he'll have to rent/lease equipment, and then there's the deductible, and you can't buy a new combine for what insurance would give

Maybe not new, but at least replace it with something similar.
Hopefully other farmers in the area will lend a hand.

A new one of those things runs about, what, $500,000?
A new CaseIH of the same size new would be about $250,000.
We offered up our Internationa 615 combine to help him bring in the rest of his harvest. Other farmers in the area have leant up equipment and help. It's really nice to see all these competing farmers pull together to help out someone in need.
He had insurance, but like Woody said, he will still be in for a loss. He wont get a combine of that same condition for the same money.

Maybe he should get those Pimp My Ride or Overhaulin guys to just rip it apart and fix it. Might be cheaper.

Just a thought...
we have near 100,000 TS members, and I'd say 50% are active.
So those of us that are active paypal brandon 5 dollars, or whatever you feel like. He tallies that cash, and donates it to the farmer (no strings attached), just for the hell of it. That would be 250,000 in theory.
We probably wont reach the big money goal, but it would be a great experiment, and a good cause.
It'd blow the farmer's mind, prove more worth to the internet's far reaches, and untimately, help somebody who needs it.
Anyone think It'll work? The cost of a cup of "trendy" coffee...it cant hurt.
I'd put in 5 or so to start and see how it works out.
You up for it brandon?

It sounds like a good idea, however I think something like that would hit a newspaper, then TS would be flooded with sad stories
If Brandon is willing, private message me and I'll donate $20 to kick it off. I'm not worried about what the newspapers will do with the story.
TundraSolutions members are savvy enough to be able to separate the wheat from the chaff insofar as a sob story is concerned.
I am sure the farmer would be thrilled to hear that at least some people are willing to help.
If anyone was willing to donate some money to help this farmer, I would be sure that it would go to a fund to help him out. I would say that this would only work if people were willing to donate, $10 bucks wont do much toward a new combine, but a bunch of people donating $5-10 would.
If people are willing to do this, I can accept check, money order, and I will see if my paypal still works well enough to accept money.
Thanks guys for wanting to help, I will have to contact the farmer to let him know the story. I actually dont know him personally yet, but I have a feeling that I will soon.

Actually, in about 2months, I will be washing/waxing one exactly like that one.
Look for the pics.
Everyone, me and dave are getting some ideas on this money dontation thing. I want to make sure this is even a nice guy first, I dont know him very well, but I have heard he is a good man. No sense in sending money to a a-hole.

Where did you get the pics?
If farmers have enough money to hire you to detail their tractors...well, they are just making too much money.

Perhaps PayPal will exempt any fees to the money considering its for a good cause.
I take it fire extinguishers arent carried on those rigs. Considering help is a long ways away I would think a farmer would make that a requirement on every vehicle and equipment that has the potential for creating fire. Could have stopped the fire before it had a chance to cause severe damage. A 5 lb fire extinguisher should be plenty. Or go for broke (literally) with a 150 lb'er ($4300). One of my recommendations are the Amerex products. From personal experience they are worth the $.
My folks for the longest time didnt have a extinguisher in their home. F'in crazy, border line stupidity, if you ask me. I gave them a nice one as a present. Even if you have no clue on how to use it, having one is better then nothing. It would suck watching your house go up in flames just because a candle tipped over, or a grease fire caught on. Having the right type and size of course is important too.
Stay away from those crappy Kiddie extinguishers. Go with Halon or a equivalent.
