This is a discussion thread titled "A Geriatric Rocker", within the Off-Topic forum, part of the General Forums category.
The Mrs. and I are hopefully going to get Rush tickets this weekend for a June show in Chicago.
Back to the subject...in, I believe it was, 1989 we went to see Tom Petty at Alpine Valley. While waiting in line for beers, some young f**k called me a "geriatric rocker". Hell, I was only 29 and my brother had to hold me back. (We're Scottish)
We've been to many concerts, Doobie Bros. in '76, Fleetwood Mac (the wife made me go) The Stones, Neil Young, CSN&Y, Gordon Lightfoot, etc.....
So, if we see Rush in June, will we NOW be considered Geriatric Rockers?
Be nice Tundra Hick!

No, you are a geriatric rocker if you can go to a Stones concert and say, "Ethel, those young'uns shure can play the gee-tar, cain't they?"

You got that right!
There's something a little off seeing 50 y.o. long-haired rockers rockin'. Good music nonetheless.
I saw Tom Petty about 5 years ago. I think he died sometime in the 90's and no one has told him yet. That dude looks like a freaking ghost. I've had a couple of ear surgeries since and can no longer tolerate the decibel levels of most concerts today. I'll still put in the earplugs for Jimmy Buffett though.

BTW: after the concert take your wife home and watch Flashgordon, then you'd have a perfect geezer 70-80s evening.
Now that was Si-Fi!

At Fleetwood Mac, they were so loud that when I went to the bathroom, they actually sounded better in there.

The only hope for the Stones to get some satisfaction is for them to turn to the Lord. What a miserable life it must be to be stoned all the time. What a terrible message to preach that has no future as sex, drugs and rockin' roll.
What amazes me is they have survived so long. A lot of their contemporaries were dead at 28. God save their souls.

Jan, going to play Devils advocate here (sorry for the choice of words) and I really don't want to turn this thread into something other than what I intended....
I don't think the Rolling Stones were "stoned" all the time. Maybe 89.9% but not all the time. And really, are they different than any other famous musician or rock n' roll group? You know as I that it is an extensive list of those who left such a impact on our lives "totally baked"!
Who is to say that the Stones haven't found the lord? Did you ask them? I'm certainly not trying to be mean to you as I really believe you believe in your faith and I respect you for that but you really don't know who believes or not. Don't pass judgement on those you don't know....
Anyway, wish me luck in getting tickets tomorrow to the Rush concert. And no, I won't be "stoned" if we go....

Good luck in getting tickets.
I grew up in the sixties and listened to the Doors, Beatles, 3 Dog Night, Stones, etc. in my BC days. I remember the culture very clearly and the messages in the music. I primarily have listened to classical, Christian, some Country and Western the past 30 years. As I remember Hendrix, Joplin, Morrison and others OD. Morrison's dad was a Navy Admiral who disowned him. People now urinate on Jim's grave in France. John Lennon thought the Beatles were more popular than Jesus.
Music can and does send a strong message and I have seen our culture IMHO influenced negatively by some of these rock stars. Gene Simmons is always talking about marital fidelity, right? Great examples for our kids today.
Is there a correlation today between drug abuse and music which promotes it. I think yes, I highly doubt they are listening to the latest Christian music. I have been in prison for three terms and have talked with hundreds of inmates. Culture, muscians and the arts have great influence on society both positvely and negatively.
Even the Islamic terrorists claim to hate us and our culture because of its lewdness. America is a very diverse culture and people make judgments all the time. I agree we need to be careful how we judge others and we need to respect people's freedoms. I also think we need to take a stand for what we think is right and warn people of perceived detriments to our culture and way of life. Just watch these political primaries and you will see some very harsh judgments made on these candidates by each other especially on their religious beliefs.
The Chineese understand the need to police their society as they trying to alleviate all the pornography from the internet in China. They believe it corrupts the youth.
Sorry for the rant as I know this is not what this thread is about and will be my last post on it.
Have fun at the concert. Chicago is a great city. I have good friends in Wheaton.
