This is a discussion thread titled "Cell Phone Early Termination fees", within the Off-Topic forum, part of the General Forums category.
I want a nice convergence device, email, web, gps, cell phone, etc. I found one that fits the bill for me, The HTC Tilt. I can buy the unit off ebay for about 375-400 used/greymarket or 500-600 with no contract from various dealers. I also found that my employer has a rather nice partnership with At&t and I can get it from them for $125 with a 2 year contract.
Problem is that I hate at&t and cringe at the idea I would be paying them 40+ a month. So I figured out that if I cancel service after 31 days I can keep the phone and pay them a 175 early term fee.
So 125+175=300 So I get the phone at a significant discount from a "trustworty" dealer. So am I missing something? All opinions welcome.
Check the fine print. Most discounts on phones are conditional on the contract time so you could get nailed for the term fees and the full cost of the phone.

Not just Ma Bell, but all cell companies in general. I have not had a cell contract in 8 years and never will again. Cell companies continually find ways to squeeze every last penny out of us, which is fine, but I dont like contracts. Would any employer hire me if I forced them to sign a contract that said they have to pay me if I dont perform to standard? Nope, and neither to I. I enjoy the benefits of a free market and reward the best compnay with my business.
I just got out of 2 year agreement with my cell phone. They try to lure me with a new phone by signing another 2 year but I said no. It feels good being free again
I would suggest the Sprint HTC Mogul 6800 on a SERO account, go look at howard forums for details.
$30.00 a month for 500 minutes unlimited texting, data to name a few great features.
I have a blackberry 8130 (the pearl) and it has all the functions you need. However I got mine at $0 for a 3 year contract. However the monthly costs are another story -- I average about $100 a month in costs. AM on an unlimited texting plan. :P
HTC Mogul 6800 = NO GPS But thanks for the info, great product, same company makes both phones.
The Tilt (HTC 8925) is unlockable so I can activate it on other carriers.
The Mogul DOES have GPS with the latest ROM. And you can't get unlimited data/text, 500 anytime minutes, and unlimited weekends on any other carrier for $30/month. It's a screaming deal. I've been looking at the Moto Q9C or the Mogul, maybe even the Centro. Probably go with the Q9C. Decisions, decisions..... /Mike

Just a couple of notes. The HTC you are admiring is a 3G UMTS phone. Currently AT&T is the only 3G UMTS providers nearly nation wide. T-Mobile will be launching UMTS over the next year however their data speeds are very slow since their not deploying HSDPA just R99 data. The HTC also falls back onto the GSM/EDGE network which will allow you to use it on either AT&T or T-Mobile (once Unlocked) nationwide. since they are the only nation wide GSM/EDGE carriers in the US.
