I suppose it depends on what you like to do.
In Montreal, I like to visit Old Montreal, which has cobble stone streets, not a lot of traffic, perfect for a walk and taking in the culture.
If you want to drink, you can go anywhere, but in old Montreal there's a bar which overlooks a cobblestone area. Street performers abound, you can sit at a little bar, its close to the St. Lawrence. Its at the corner of Place Jacques Cartier and Rue de la Commune E.
You can also go for a nice walk along the water, there's a bus which is aquatic to go on a sight seeing tour, there are also some street bazaar type shops, last time I was there I saw an old sailing ship which was docked and free to board.
Parc Mont Royal is also nice, it gives a great view of the city and its a fun drive through the twisty bits. Its very nice at night too, there's a parking area and a look out, the city looks very cool with all the lights on.
If you go to Mont Royal early in the day, I'd suggest breakfast at Restaurant L'Avenue, which is 922, avenue du Mont-Royal Est
