Anyone know of any good 2WD trails (or trail blazin') areas in Southern California? I like to crawl around a bit too, but mostly fast trails.
All I've done is out by Joshua Tree in the old mining roads just East of the park. I've heard there are also some good trails out in Death Valley as well.
I'd like to find some fire roads up in Arrowhead or Big Bear that might be passible in 2WD (in the Summer months).
Any other ideas? Any planned events? If not - let's do it!

PS - Thanks Possum for helping us get this Forum up and running!
I too have 2wd and would like to go on some 2wd trails.. never been to any.. stuck at school.. I wish i had 4wd.. i only live 10 min drive from the sand dunes here at pismo..
Unless you're into Mountain Goating or Mud Bogging - you don't need 4WD to have a blast off-roading! I've had 2WD all my life and have had great experiences!
FWIW - you wouldn't want to take your Tundra in the sand dunes anyway! You'd ruin it!
Also I think Hollister Hills or Hungry Valley are 2wd friendly too. Haven't been to either one so I can't say for sure but I know if you ask any of the TTORA guys, they'd be able to give ya more info on where to go for some 2wd action!
But anyway, if you're planning on a bear run, let me know, I'm down for some of that!
i'm down, anybody know of places to go off roading in orange county? i've heard of a place in rancho santa margharita somwhere, but not sure. if you know please PM
I'm from down in Rancho Santa Margarita and I can tell you the place down in the valley down there is called Holy Jims. You can take that road for about 10 miles and go about half way up Saddleback Mountain, from the south side valley. Also, there is the Santiago Canyon trail that you can take that will put you all the way to the top of the Saddleback Mountains and Santiago Peak. It's a nice 2-3 hour trip that'll put you from sea level to about 6000 ft in no time. It's lots of fun, you don't need 4wd in the summer if you are only going to the top and back, and the views are great. If you are going to go from Santiago Canyon to Ortega Highway, you will most likely need 4wd and some moderate ground clearnace (experience from last summer, don't know about current cond.). That's a nice ridge run and it'll take you about 4-5 hours total if you take your time and have fun. Go early in the morning and enjoy the views. Watch out for mountain bikers, MX riders, and the occasional drunk guy flying down the single wide trail at 50 mph. Other than that, have fun. I try to do it once a month just for kicks and to relax. anyone from so cal ever driven to vegas? anyone ever taken the dirt road the whole way? Im sure most people know where the 15 makes a turn and meets with the 215, near glen helen. There is a street called kenwood. When you exit heading northbound you go under the freeway and will see a big transfromer. Under it will be a dirt road. This road follows the powerlines all the way to vegas. On a big traffic day it will be quicker but its about a 7 hour trip.

Cool - I may have to try that some time since my folks just moved to Vegas area (Henderson)
My only concerns are, what happens if you have a mechanical prob? How isolated are you or how far from the hwy is it? Is it still within cell service?
After all, it is the frickin' desert we're talkin' about here!
If you should have a problem your SOL. The only people on that road are the big trucks that service the power lines, and I assume its not very often. I dont know about cell service because I usually travel in a group of 5 or 6 and we all have CB's. Its with in walking distance of the 15 but its a good 45 minutes to an hour.

Okeeedoke! Guess that's something to plan as a group event then!
Most all of the dirt roads in Anza Borrego Desert State Park are suitable for 2WD.
Johusha Tree is great in the spring for wildflowers. If you get to Death Valley, be sure and check out Titus Canyon in the North East section of the Park.
A reminder the desert is a "winter" months environment, too hot in the summer for most folks. Take plenty of drinking water anytime you are in the heat.
was just looking through this old thread and found some cool places. Does anyone have a map of the Holy Jim/Santiago Canyon area? I was interested in going and need some info. Not very familiar with it.
