This is a discussion thread titled "Tattoos and piercings", within the Off-Topic forum, part of the General Forums category.
i need a favor from whomever has the time. i've got a term paper for sociology and need a survey filled out. it's in regards to your thoughts on tattoos and piercings. (i'll post a follow-up w/ the actually survey questions.) just figured that the diverse group of people on TS would generate some good input for my survey. you could either post it here or PM me. also, you don't have to fill out any personal info you don't want, but age and gender would be cool. if not, then that's cool as well.
i was actually gonna start a thread about tattoos anyways (especially w/ all of the segments on the discovery channel, MTV, etc.), but then coincidentally it ended up being my term paper topic.
anyways, i'd appreciate any assistance!

The general rule about tattoo's: Once you get one you always want more!
I didn't get my first piercing or tattoo until after I was out of college. I think that between my Computer Science degree and having moved to an extremely conservative and religious city where that sort of thing is frowned on made me a little rebelious. Some people buy art for their walls, others buy it for their bodies.

Too many to list, we have friends of all walks of life that range in all directions of this question, but as to why they got piercing was because they wanted to.

Used to hate it, now I'm thinking of possibly getting one.

It probably hurts like hell the first time. But not gutsy enough to get one...yet.

Some people get it to conform to others, their friends or acquaintances have one so they'll get one too. I know a lot of people who ended up getting one because their friend, g/f or b/f, is getting them too or has them. Maybe peer pressure?

Some people get it to conform to others, more like a social thing. And some get it probably cuz they like pain...I think.

I'll describe one good friend and also my partner in crime. He's married with one little girl. He's 24, listens to the same stuff I listen to: electronic, hip hop, dance. He's educated and is in auto financing. The motivation behind the tattoos is basically to show his family's heritage. He's got his beloved granda, child, and other names of his family tattoo'd on his body, usually in the torso and back area...none on the extremities.

Yes, numerous people. Most of which have strong reasons or meaning behind them.

19-23 years old, males. The women I know with tattoos have them to "look pretty" or "look cool", MOST of the guys I know with them have them for strong reasons. Music is all over the board. Middle to upper-middle class.

Numerous people, the girls I know have them with good taste in mind, the guys have ridiculous ones.

- they run the gammut, from tattoo shop regulars covered in ink, to business and professional types, with little personal tattoos. Some are military, etc.

-usually young, alternative, punk types, but not always of course.....but they usually have the more visual "face full of metal" looks going on. A lot of women, from teens to middle age have navel and nipple piercings.....this has gotten more common.

Came close to getting Syncros "Hammer & Cycle" on my left calf when heavy into road bicycling, but wasn't a strong enuff rider to pass anyone. Did put some decal-style tattoos on my arms when was into trail running; they would last about 3 months. One lady told me they weren't real.

self expression & fun! when i was growing up, many of my elders seemed to have difficulty pronouncing my name. somehow the "V" started sounding like a "B"...then as time went on.... OLIVER became OLIBER then evolved to OLIBEAR. i have "OLI" in old-english on my left sholderblade followed by an outline of a grizzly bear. it's pretty much 1/4 of my back. i decided to go with an outline since my skin is brown, why bother spending extra money to fill it in!

although i do not show it much when it comes to food, i think moderation is the key factor here. i am not embarresed by my tattoo or my piercings nor do i regret them. i do however believe that there is a time & place to show them off.
