This is a discussion thread titled "Snopes.com LEFT WING authority", within the Off-Topic forum, part of the General Forums category.
Snopes.com is basically a left wing sight. I have read several articles that state that they have/will take a liberal view on politics. So since they are considered "the expert and the gospel of truth", if you are a conservative...one might read these these articles... (there are many out there about this)
Brings up a truly dirty campaign tactic I noticed reading the paper the other day...
We're unlucky enough to have the DNC in Denver soon.
Seems the Democrats arranged a no-protest zone around anywhere a candidate might be during their upcoming visits.
The resulting fallout caused a grandmother to be arrested and escorted away from the building where McCain was speaking recently...video is on YouTube. Secret Service made the call to have her and her poster removed from the premises.
How does it look? Big bad Republicans denying freedom of speech and expression.
The Left has no other option than to lie and mischaracterize things. Very few people would agree with them otherwise.

a left wing site using 'campaign tactics' as part of 'the left['s]'conspiracy to distort truth? we're talking about a married couple handling what started as a hobby website that sees millions of hits a day. aside from the 'he said, she said,' and some completely subjective interpretations of reporting there's not a substantive basis to this story. some of it sounds like a stretch. slow news day (in 2002)?

Snopes can be a good resource for non-political info. Anything having to do with politics though, they are very biased to the left. I noticed that a long time before I read any of those articles.

The left aren' the only ones that will lie and mischaracterize. The right is just as famous, or infamous, as the left. At least be intellectually honest about it.
Very few people would agree with the left? Only on this decidedly right leaning message board would that be true. Otherwise just about half of the country agrees with them while the other half agrees with the right.

Yes, both sides generate these stupid e-mails that get sent around the internet. I don't like getting them and I never forward them to anyone because they all contain about 5% truth distorted with 95% BS. The difference with Snopes though is that for the stories attacking the Right, they will focus on the 5% truth to try and give it some legitimacy. On stories attacking the Left, they will focus on the BS and ignore any truth that the story might contain. They are political spin-doctors disguising themselves as arbiters of the truth.

I've not used Snopes for much in the way of politics, but I can't say that the bias has leaped out at me. When I have noticed bias, it has been what appears to be just that, bias. That is, nothing necessarily intentional, but the result of opinions and background that we all carry with us. I won't call them anything more. However, when it comes to things like politics, I have always looked for multiple sources of information, simply because that is the nature of the beast.

I haven't had much experience with Snopes, but I recently got an email claiming that Obama got around $200m through internet contributions mostly from Saudi Arabia and Iran. I was pretty incensed by it and passed it on. It actually made sense to me. I decided to see if I could find any corraboration and Snopes said it was phoney. I tend (and tended) to believe Snopes that it was just another scare tactic by the right. These kinds of tactics make me lean against the side putting this kind of crap out. I passed another email to the people I'd sent it to showing Snopes's findings. I have no idea if they are biased one way or the other, but I doubt they could stay in business if they put out false info.
The Obama 50 lies is a perfect example. Instead of answering all 50, the authors at Snopes only address the ones they can discredit. The other 28 of the 50 claims are ignored.
I'm not necessarily accusing them of lying, just spinning facts to suit their politics.

But right at the top of the page of Obama's 50 Lies it says "Status: Multiple" indicating that there is some veracity to what was said. It seems the ones that were dealt with were the ones most easily discredited. Again, the possibility exists that they chose the ones they could discredit due to bias, but they also didn't say the entire "50 Lies" was false.
