VENTURA - A California Highway Patrol officer has been charged in Ventura County with five misdemeanors that are being treated as hate crimes.
The District Attorney's Office announced Friday that 34-year-old Seth Taylor is accused of making criminal threats and disturbing the peace in two off-duty altercations last year at bars in Ventura and Oxnard.
Senior Deputy District Attorney Karen Wold declined to provide details as to why the incidents are being treated as hate crimes.
Robert Sandbach, Taylor's attorney, said he couldn't comment on the allegations but described Taylor as a former U.S. Marine who has had a "distinguished" eight-year career with the CHP. CHP Officer Matthew Winter said that Taylor continues to work out of that agency's Ventura office.
Do you guys think law enforcement officials use their personal judgement over their views of people when on-duty like this CHP guy does when hes off? No one knows for sure if this specific officer did when on-duty, but looks like off-duty he seems like spiteful man.
LEO are not any different than other jobs...when I get home, I can be surly and bitter about people I work with. Doesn't mean I'm that way while I'm "on-duty"...
We can't even begin to speculate about an entire profession based on the actions of some douche...that's like asking if all accountants are unethical because of Arthur Andersen.

Well, are you just waking up? We don't have robots for that job yet. Sure there are bad people doing all kinds of jobs. You think every doctor is a perfect person and there are none that are screwed up? As far as I know all doctors, crane operators ect. are human and there will be bad people and mistakes invovled. The great thing about this country is most are good hard working people and the officer is not the norm. And no I am not a police officer and have no family members that are. I do know they have a hard job and most are good at it and good people.
They are people , most in my rural area are underpaid, some have attitude problem, some do not. What gets me is we have quite a few that wear swat type clothing while on patrol. Are we all bad guys and they are ready for us.
Good people, bad people...sometimes its a matter of location and politics as well...I have several members of my family in law enforcement and the military, but the town I live in, is corrupt as h3ll.

It's usually been my experience that they will return whatever attitude you treat them with. Once in a while you run into a total pr!ck though. No different than any other profession.

Well don't ask a cop about how good and nice people are. In general, the people these guys (and women) have to deal with on a daily basis are the less nice, the less well adapted, the more psychopathic, aggressive, and filled with attitude segment of our society. They work in the crappy neighborhoods that the rest of us avoid. People that are drunk, argumentative, pushy, resentful, and just plain mean then begin to constitute their "public".
Police officers become pessimistic and cynical due to their exposure, and it's not surprising if they begin to think everyone is constantly lying, cheating, and bullying.
Just like doctors tend to start to see everyone as sick because that's what they see day to day.
Many police officers I know start to see everyone as a potential criminal, but of course they have a curious double standard, and other cops -- their friends -- are given a different level of respect.
I've found that if you don't go at them with a whole lot of attitude, and a grievance and a sense of entitlement, you get back the level of respect you deserve. Maybe this isn't always the case for everyone, but it has been my good fortune to only have had good interactions with cops.
Anyway, it's not a job I would want to do, facing criticism for everything you do, being held to a standard that "civilians" aren't and a mistake can result in someone dying.

That was well put.
As someone that comes from a family of law enforcement/military people I think you are correct however there are those that have the attitude "if you cant beat em, join em" but still think they are "above" the law because they view themselves as better than the people they are "joining". I live in a town where the PD is not only corrupt as h3ll, but the ones that arent corrupt are just plain lazy or incompetant (proably because the choose to not be corrupt but dont have the ability to go against the others). The DA's office is one of the most corrupt in the nation and will likely (if the citizens are lucky) be regulated/investigated by the FED's soon. I give props to the County Sherrif's Dept, they appear to be the only organization around here with an ounce of sense! P.S. I have never even had a ticket ever...until a radar cam got me a few months ago...so I am speaking from a law abiding citizens point of view, not a disgruntled criminal.
