I would have to downgrade from a truck for it to pay off, and that's not worth anything.

Honestly it all depends on your individual situation as to whether or not you should do such a thing. My truck is paid for so I'm going to drive the wheels off her. Cheaper to put fuel in her than make another car payment plus buy gas.

That's like asking if it's worth it to get a sex change so you can get cheap drinks on Ladie's Night. No, it's not worth it.

That's not nearly as interesting as how long it would take for a fuel efficient used car to pay for itself, or a used hybrid at current prices.
Used Insights are cheap, if you can find one...
Tho honestly I think it's more realistic for people who bought a truck as their primary vehicle and frankly enjoy driving it to simply buy a second car, vs trading the truck.
Honda's bringing back the Insight in 2010, supposedly priced under 18K$. While I'd have more fun with a turbocharged RS-series Audi, what I really need is a runabout and the hybrid sedans fit the bill quite well.
In the mean time, pay down debt and save money for a few years, carpool, bike, walk, etc...but I do have my eye on the new Insight. With about 1000$ I should be able to stick a small turbo on there, like that Red Rocket first-gen Insight about five years ago, and it'll almost perform like the Tundra.
Well, I suppose if I could tow and four wheel my Neon, I wouldn't need the truck in the first place. Like was said above, it depends on your situation. There are a variety of factors to consider.

I don't care if gas goes up to $15 a gallon. I'm not getting rid of my truck.
Yup, they'll have to pry the keys from my cold, dead hands.
