Re: Dont like the thin paint? Dont like your color? try this!
I sold vehicle wraps for a while. That material is probably Arlon GTX or a 3M product, not your basic white vinyl. This type of vinyl is designed specifically for use on vehicles. It's printable, removable (which is a huge difference from standard vinyl), blocks color, and can withstand the elements of Mother Nature a million times better than basic, cheap vinyl.
What this BMW guy did is just use the blank material; probably laminated with an optically clear cold (not liquid) laminate for durability. Cold laminate is much thicker than liquid.
It's not cheap to do, a couple grand at the minimum. Labor on this is not easy (bubbles, creases, etc) and will be far more expensive than the material itself. The most difficult vehicles to wrap have compound curves, like a VW Beetle, which we refused to do.
Just look in the Yellow Pages under signs and you'll see companies doing vehicle wraps.
Why would someone spend thousands $$$$ to wrap their vehicle? It's cheaper than painting, removable, and protects the paint underneath. When you're ready to sell your car, just remove the vinyl and viola, your paint will look like new.
