Default radar detectors......

Hey guys,
Im in the market for a new radar detector and am torn between who says they have the best. The 3 in general im talking about are beltronics, escort, and another brand i can't think of at the moment. They are all around the $400-500 range.I don't mind spending that much on one as long as it is accurate and picks up a radar/laser from a nice distance. My last whistler would only pick it up once they were close enough to get ya which was about 600ft lol....
What do you guys use and do you like them???
Charles

You can't go wrong with Bel 995, Escort Passport X50, or Valentine 1. They all have awesome range and pick up Ka bands better than any other detector out there IMO. I've had 2 995's, a Passport X8500, and a V1. The Escorts are basically Bel's anyways.

I've got the valentine 1 and i will never go back, you will not be disappointed. You should also check in to the k-40, its a pretty good one for around 300 and they'll pay your tickets for the first year. Either way you'd be safe, good luck and keep us posted on what you decide.

I honestly don't feel like the arrows matter that much on the V1. I know if I get any Ka or laser I am slowing down. I could care less if the cop is in front of me or behind me. The 995 and Passort 8500 both let me know easily 1.5 miles before any cop.

Well I don't know what you do with your radar detectors lol but mine either stay planted on my dash or in a nice cushioned Beltronics or EScort carrying case. lol

Order it online for sure. Just type the one you want in google and it will pop up with the Google store thing with all the cheapest places on the net. Then just pick the cheapest price and you're set.

Have owned V1's for 15 years. Use it on my FJR as well. There is a reason why people recommend the Valentine and it is because it is a great product and so is their customer service. Kudos to Mike!

Real quick: Radar Detector Jammer Forum for all the info you could possibly want on every major brand/model of detector.

I own a V1 (at least 5 years now, probably longer) and will never switch. This summer I sent it in because some of the electronics inside gave up their magic smoke. It was out of warranty by many, many years. The Valentine folks fixed her up free of charge, and had it back to me in 1 week. All I paid was shipping to them. Customer service doesn't get much better than that. Mine is hardwired into my truck. All the pieces parts you need to do that are included with the unit when you buy. Lots of folks sell them on ebay, but they're all used. Last I heard, the ONLY way to get a new V1 was to buy from Valentine directly. V1's website has a "serial number search" in which you can enter a serial number and see if it needs any upgrades. Many of the ebay postings will give you the serial number so you can check it out yourself. NEVER buy one used without verifying the serial number, and if someone offers to sell you one without a serial number, run away. It's probably stolen, and V1 won't touch it no matter how much you offer to pay them to fix it.

Rock and FivePoint, the directional arrows are good for this reason. If K or Ka alerts sound, I immediately slow down. Once I do that, I know which way to look. If it's ahead of me, and I can get a visual on the patrolman, I know how to respond. If he's parked on the side of the road or in the median, I have to stay at a slower rate of speed for longer. However, if he's ahead of me heading towards me, I can speed up because his radar can't get an accurate read on oncoming traffic, so I can speed back up again. It's not an absolute MUST HAVE feature, but it's nice. Kinda like the folding mirrors on the truck. I could certainly live without them, but I enjoy that I do have them.

I've got no practical experience with the Bel or Escort, but I know Mike Valentine helped design the original Bel units. I'm sure they're all worth something, and just like everything else in this world, they all have pluses and minuses. I abuse the hell out of my V1, and she's never failed me in a pinch. The 1 ticket I got was with a smokey shooting Lidar, and like I've mentioned in other threads, laser warnings really just serve to give you notice that you will be receiving a ticket shortly.

Drive safe, out there...

Yes you can cut the wire and hardwire the Bel's or Escorts. I've had this done before and it works great.

I too have a V1 (12 years) and would not have anything else period. Having a highly rated radar detector like the V1 is one thing but understanding how it works with the different radars the various agencies are using is equally as important. I use my V1 daily in my Tundra and move it to the Vette or or my wifes Acura as necessary. The CR-V dosen't go fast enough! I even take it when I have to do extended driving after flying for business or pleasure. Just like the AMX Card, Don't leave home without it! Get all the accessories too.

I have to be even more careful on "my side of the hill". It's VERY steep and you tend to pick up speed getting to the bottom
