Some of you may or may not know, but my occupation is a police officer.
What that info out of the way, yesterday my partner, his trainee, my ridealong and I went to a domestic disturbance. This house was a problem house with the girlfriend and boyfriend always fighting with each other. As we approach the house, I notice there is a big chain and bowl of dog food outside of the house.
The lady opens the garage door and a two year old female pit comes running out. I thought at first the dog was going to jump up on me, but insteads clamps on to my right foot. I yell at my partner to shot the dog while I was trying to kick it off of me. The dog released her grip for a second and bite me for a second time. Luckily I was able to taser the dog, but only one prong hit the dog. It did the trick and the dog started to yelp. It then ran inside the house. My next option was to unload a few .40 caliber slugs into the dogs head, but I was afraid of hitting my partners who were standing in front of me.
The dog bite through my boot twice (on the leather portion) and ripped my pants leg. There were two puncture wounds on my foot. Animal Control came out and took custody of the dog and issued the owner a citation. The medical clinic gave me a techni shot (My spelling is not the greatest). My arm hurts worse than my foot. The pressure from the bite hurt worse than the bite.
About a year ago, another officer and I responded on the same call. A pit came out of the house and tried to bite him, buy a 9mm round to the back put an end to that. A few months ago two pits killed a three month old baby in the city in work in. Both dogs were killed when the officers arrived and tried to attack them.
I know pits are getting a bad rap from the media, but I place most of the blame on the irresponsible owners. I am not mad at the dog, just the owner for being stupid. I later learned the pit who bite me just had puppies and may have been protecting her litter, but it still hurts.

I believe irresponsible pet owners are 100% responsible for pits getting a bad reputation. The pit's reputation didn't come from what they were originally bred for, but for the injury and death they have inflicted on humans and other pets.
I would consider myself lucky that the dog went for the foot rather than ripping the jugular in the neck.
Hope you have a speedy recovery.

Wow sorry to hear that! Best of luck with recovery and good job of getting the dog away.
And I also agree about the owners being the problem. They may have a tendency to be more aggressive but their attitudes reflect that of how their owner raised them and treated them.
Many pit owners shouldn't have dogs period! And unfortunately those same unfit people don't know how to properly raise that kind of breed. But worst of all....those are the only owners you hear about because of instances like this
Best of luck recovering and good to hear you made it out doing alright.

It's not just pits that are territorrial about a litter. My oldest daughter(she was 3 @ the time) and I went to a friends house. As soon as we entered the door the COCKER SPANIAL came from the back of the house and bit her in the face. I almost killed that dog with my bare hands. Luckily, no scars from the bite but, she doesn't like dogs to this day!!!!

My wife's now-deceased Sheltie was very territorial. She once tried to bite my brother-in-law on the heel when he was walking away from her. Thing is, we are responsible pet owners and NEVER tried to teach her such things. I think it was just in her nature.
Aren't "domestics" wonderful. I'm not a cop but work with many and they all say the domestic disturbance call is the worst.
BTW, was the owner at least responsible enough to have all the current shots and vaccine's?
We have a Cocker and like Playa mentioned, we cannot trust her around little kids. When she was a pup, we went through the whole training process and exposed her to "people" since we knew the breed had "issues". She's fine with adults but not kids, just the nature of the animal.
Other than that, she's a great dog and very protective of my wife and the house.
Glad to read you came out OK and good luck with your recovery.
Glad youre ok. I too agree that the owners are the problem. I do believe though that part of the Pits rep comes from the fact that even if a good pit gets hurt and reacts out of instinct (as do humans), the problem with the pits is that they have such a strong jaw/head that they can do alot of damage just by "nipping". I grew up with German Shepard, police dogs...we had to have permission slips from my friends parents for them to be at our house even when the dog was in the garage...but I have pictures of my sister and I crawling all over that dog and he was very gentle with us...that kind of loyalty is a crazy thing, beit humans or dogs.

The number one reason I got a concealed handgun license is because of a couple of close calls with loose pits in the neighborhood. It's really sad that I can't feel comfortable letting my kids go outside to play unless I am right with them and carrying a gun. Frankly, I think irresponsible owners should be put down right along with the dogs.

My wife, 2 yr old daughter, and my 50lb wirehair were out for a Sunday walk last March when a male pitbull got loose several houses down and across two streets and came running all the way down. He latched on to my dog's neck and never let go and would have killed him had I not kicked the crap out of that dog so many times that I screwed up his hips. My wife took off with my 2 yr old girl. I was scared for my life that he pit would turn on me, but I wasn't going to sit there and watch my dog die, which never fought back. $1,000 surgery later and my dog healed up. Then, a few months later police officers had to shoot 2 different pitbulls in our town.
You say you don't blame the dog, and only the owner. However, both are at fault, as pitbulls have been selectively bread (like all breeds) over the decades to be mean as hell and protective as can be.
about two years ago i had a similar incident. back when i was on patrol i went to a chronic domestic apt as well, and once inside this pit came running at me, and my gun was already out when i saw it. he lunged at my leg and just caught the fabric at the same time my gun came down on his eye and destroyed the eyeball... that stopped him better than shooting him believe....
if i had not been in a second story apt and couldnt guarantee my shot wouldnt go through the floor to the one below, it would definitely be a dead dog but i coudlnt so i didnt shoot.
the owners tried to file animal cruelty charges on me criminally then civilly...geesh....needless to say that didnt go anywhere.
On my street alone...we have about nine pit bulls...one house has three another two and another three and another 1...what the hell...mostly college kids that own them too The kids across the street from me got arrested when their pits got loose and ran after a neighbor. I can hear the dogs fighting occasionally in the yard.

The only thing a Pit Bull is good for is target practice. Even the ones that seem tame and docile will turn in a heartbeat if "feels" threatened. Few other breeds are as unpredictable as a Pit. - my .02

Yesss!!!
A veteranarian told me one time that people own pit bulls to nurse their egos.
There are some vets that will not treat pits. Pits apparently do not show agression like other dogs, so when a pit bull comes running towards you, you don't know whether it is going to jump up and lick you to death or jump up and tear your throat out.
