This should be a "hang'em by the ballz" offense.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Court finds RC Church liable for abuse of 8 altar boys
After a decade-long court fight, the Roman Catholic Church in St. John's has been found liable for the sexual abuse of eight altar boys by the late Rev. James Hickey in the late 1970s.
The Newfoundland and Labrador Supreme Court's trial division made the ruling against the Roman Catholic Episcopal Corporation of St. John's on Monday.
Hickey was charged in 1989 with molesting the boys while he was parish priest on the Burin Peninsula. He was convicted, and sentenced to five years in prison. He died in 1992.
"It damaged [the boys] emotionally. The rest of their life is off the rails, if you like," lawyer Greg Stack said Monday.
"Normal sexual relationships with partners [have] been affected," said Stack, who has worked with many of Hickey's victims, including the eight from Rushoon-Parker's Cove.
He said Hickey took more than just their innocence. He destroyed their faith.
"The boys, who were the altar boys in these parishes, generally came from the more devout Catholic homes. The more devout, the more religious parents that pushed their children to become altar boys, and these were the boys who were victimized by their parish priest.
"So it is the whole coupling of that - the sense that God has abused them. And that's what they believed in those small communities. By and large, the parish priest was a God-like figure."
Stack said Monday's victory is important.
"This is a really good point to be at. If the church doesn't soon come around with an acceptable [compensation] figure, then we can go and get an interim application and get an interim payment ... and have a full assessment done. Hopefully we won't have to go through that exercise, but we are prepared to," Stack said.
As far as he knows, Stack said, these are the last of Hickey's many victims to go through the court system. But, he said, there are about 12 other cases involving four or five more priests.
It was the Hickey case that prompted charges against other priests, including several members of the Irish Christian Brothers running the Mount Cashel orphanage.
There were also allegations that previous investigations, beginning in 1975, had been covered up, and the offenders whisked away to other provinces, where they received treatment and soon took on new religious postings.
Eventually, the Newfoundland government established a royal commission to investigate the allegations. The publicity also led to other investigations into sexual abuse in institutions across Canada.
By March 1989, police had laid 77 charges against the eight members of the Irish Congregation of Christian Brothers who were implicated in the earlier investigation. They also charged a ninth man for more recent offences, and laid 17 charges against three civilians.
Nine Christian Brothers were eventually convicted and sentenced to between one and 13 years in prison.
Yes, everytime you (Catholics) deposit money into the offering, a gift of money to the church or the like you are supporting these priests who go to trial.
Where do you think the funds come from?
And his name is Hickey?
That in itself sends up a flag.....sorry.
More like a millstone offense. The priest should of taken verse 8 seriously.
Matthew 18
The Greatest in the Kingdom of Heaven
1At that time the disciples came to Jesus and asked, "Who is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven?"
2He called a little child and had him stand among them. 3And he said: "I tell you the truth, unless you change and become like little children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven. 4Therefore, whoever humbles himself like this child is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven.
5"And whoever welcomes a little child like this in my name welcomes me. 6But if anyone causes one of these little ones who believe in me to sin, it would be better for him to have a large millstone hung around his neck and to be drowned in the depths of the sea. 7"Woe to the world because of the things that cause people to sin! Such things must come, but woe to the man through whom they come! 8If your hand or your foot causes you to sin, cut it off and throw it away. It is better for you to enter life maimed or crippled than to have two hands or two feet and be thrown into eternal fire. 9And if your eye causes you to sin, gouge it out and throw it away. It is better for you to enter life with one eye than to have two eyes and be thrown into the fire of hell.
This thread has "Gonna get ugly" written all over it and is IMHO a borderline troll post.
But things like this should be kept in perspective. If you compare the Catholic priesthood with other occupations that work with children (teachers, coaches, Scout Leaders, Daycare workers, etc.) you will find that percentagewise, the number of priests who abuse children is far, far less than those other occupations.
Sadly, it's the priests that seem get all the ugly press because of lingering anti-religious sentiment in the liberal media.
I don't think it is the ABUSE so much that is despicable (although it should be a hanging offense, I agree) but the ongoing COVERUP by the church leaders. Teachers, daycare workers, and others don't suddenly get all the support of the other teachers, the boyscout higher-ups, etc., they get appropriately slammed and thrown out. If a doctor so much as has a sexual relationship with a consenting adult patient, they lose their license to practice medicine. They don't get coddled, and forgiven, and absolved and then released to continue their ways.
No one should get away with this, and pretending that it didn't happen, or reassigning the offending priests with a penance of prayer or whatever doesn't fix the problem. But blaming the "liberal" media makes it all better ???
That's right. Imagine somebody giving financial aid to a pedophile.
If you think the news article is a troll post, then pull the thread. It certainly wasn't intended to be that IMO. This is not about religion bashing, it is about a man wearing a uniform. Parents have the inalienable right to expect their children will be safe in the care of men of the cloth, teachers and police officers.
IMO, all pedophiles should be provided with a special surgical procedure.
Agreed, I'll provide the surgical instrument.
100% right and it does need to remain in perspective.
The area I highlighted in red I'll comment on.
You may be correct in the assumption that priests abuse children less than other occupations but on a national level, we don't hear about those abuses. Just when it pertains to a priest.
It is because we, the public, hold them in a higher regard. That they are carrying on the word of God, that they are there to support us, not abuse our kids.
It all does boil down to religion, the sad truth but they get all the media attention because of the standard we hold them to. Not to say a teacher, coach or daycare worker provides a less important service. It's the pedestal that these "service providers" have been placed on which will determine what, if any, attention will be given for such a crime.
I know you don't condone their actions, I'm just stating a different view.
You may think that the CC is "supporting" these priests, but you don't define "supporting." You must remember that one of the fundamental tenets of the CC is reconciliation and forgiveness. If an errant priest is transferred to a different parish, it is not part of a "cover up" but rather an opportunity for a new start in a different environment.
Yes, we support them. We pray for them all the time.
History has shown that this practice has resulted in more children being abused.
