I agree with Rock. If your high school son/daughter is out drinking and driving, you want them to be able to talk to you on the phone as they drive home drunk... Kidding
Actually you both have a point. I bought my Son a cell phone when he was around 14, so I could alway stay in touch with him and him with me. CB also has a point. If you are not responsible enough to use one safely (kid or grown up), you shouldn't be able to have one.
I also agree with the Cell Phone/driving laws. Even with blue tooth, you are being distracted, but that's better than being distracted while you are driving down the road with only one hand on the wheel or looking at your phone while you are dialing.

California has the most unsafe roads in the US. Anything to make them safer is of benefit. Military installations will not let you talk without a bluetooth connection. Good idea.

Traffic laws, shmaffic paws.
Everyone out here drives with the intention of getting where you need to go...and FAST. Very few people here obey traffic laws...
And when you get caught, you get to be pulled over by the Hoodlum Law Enforcement.
Parents would lose their kids so fast if they didn't have a way to get a hold of them. With all the underage drinking that goes on in high school, you'd be a fool to not get your kids a cell phone when they were learning how to drive.
While it's a safety issue for other people, it's also a safety issue for the kids themselves. It would be irresponsible to not have a cell phone if you're driving somewhere. Sorry, that's my opinion and I'm sticking to it :fish2:

My question for you. How did the human race get to the year 2008?
I didn't have a cell phone in high school (technology didn't exist at the time). Didn't have one when i learned to drive. Underage drinking? Ya, that happened back then too. And I'm only 30. I used to roam the woods and would disappear for the entire weekend with no way for my parents to contact me.
You think kids are bad now with drinking and drugs and crazy parties? From what I hear the 60s and 70s were completely free of drinking and drug use and sex, right?
Heck, some of the old folks on here might not have had TELEPHONES when they were in high school
I see cellphones as a nice emergency contact, but never when a vehicle is in motion unless you are a passenger and even then only if your QUIET about it.
This is really the first generation where kids with instant contact via cell phones is possible, but all the other generations made it through just fine.

People lived for millions of years without cell phones. I didn't have one when I was a kid and guess what? I never got lost. My parents always knew where their children were. Why? Because because they were GOOD PARENTS!
If you consider a cell phone for your kid to be indispensible, then you need to do a better job of parenting.

We have two kids, our son is 18 years old and is a Marine and next week he will do the exams for his drivers license. He is up till now travelling by using public transport and by that sometimes needs us to pick him up at a train station... He in fact doesn't need a cellphone ( his life's not at stake ) but it's all the more a conveniant apparatus...
Now, our daughter is 12 years old, she goes to school on bike, we live in a place where it's still quite safe but you never know what moron gets strange thoughts, seeing a young girl cycling... She has a cellphone and that feels safe...
And all that crap about "earlier years", that's just bullocks, times are changing, you wouldn't love to drive a car without a steering wheel that folds in on a frontal impact, would you?
I'm 46, that makes me one of the people who didn't have a cellphone in my younger years, I can tell you I've experienced situations where that would have helped me a lot to stay out of trouble ( not caused by me..!! )
Rockstate, you got my vote, you are so right..!!
dikkie
