The Supreme Court ruled 5-4 in favor of firefighters in New Haven Conn. The dissent was led by Darth Bader Ginsberg and the usual suspects. Court Rules for White Firefighters
I don't see any reference to the firefighters in that link.
In dissent, Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg said the white firefighters "understandably attract this court's sympathy. But they had no vested right to promotion. Nor have other persons received promotions in preference to them."
Darth Vader Ginsburg indeed. I think she entirely missed the point.
A test was administered to determine if anyone deserved a promotion. Some of the subjects demonstrated that they were deserving. While those people could have received promotions, they did not, because the city was afraid that a lack of racial diversity in the candidates showing competency deserving of promotions would lead to racial discrimination lawsuits.
If a group of people take a test to determine competency, and the results should lead to a promotion, why should it matter what color their skin happens to be? Why should one person's skin color matter more than another's? Isn't that what we've been taught for years now? Wasn't that the entire point of equality, non-discrimination policies, and affirmative action? Those policies were necessary (and still are sometimes) when skin color meant an unfair advantage.
They are outdated when the policies themselves provide an unfair advantage or an unfair disadvantage.
Let's talk about Being White for a minute...are you White? When you think of your own, personal self-identity...do you think "I am White"? Do you think "I should dress like other White people, listen to White music, enjoy White hobbies"?
Or do you think "My family is Irish. My family is Polish. My family is Russian, Scottish, Swedish, Jewish, Romany, Baltic, Italian"?
Is it even more local..."My family is Appalachian, Alaskan, Southern, Country, City, Upstate, Bayou, New England, Texan"?
I want to hear about it. When you think about your racial identity, "your people", do you think I Am White, I Am Black, I Am Latin American, I Am European, I Am Asian...or is there more to it?
There's more to me than White. My family is Appalachian..."Southern" and Upstate NY...and I am Alaskan. Some of my ancestors wore kilts, others wore horns on their helmets and sailed longships to far distant shores. They were explorers, warriors and "family men". I've been to Norway, Sweden, Scotland, Ireland and Wales. It was probably hard on my mother, that I was born with cross country skis strapped to my feet. I used to dance the Highland Fling and the Sword Dance, and I play the pipes. I am far more than the sitcoms, cheap beer, malls, suburbia, Clearchannel slop, and beta malehood that others with similar skin color may have perpetrated on the world.
I am not Italian, but I like Northern and Southern Italian food. I'm not French, but I like wine. Nor am I Russian, but I've spoken it. Italians, French, and Russians may have skin, hair and eyes that might sometimes look like mine...and people whose families came from Italy, France and Russia have been (or still are) my friends, but their families, ancestors, and history are not my own, for all we sunburn about the same.
I am far more than White, so don't compare me to others by calling me White.
How 'bout you? Where you from? Who are "your people"? I know I said "White" in my example...but I want to hear from more than just people who get railed in to checking the White box on the government form. Does anybody else feel a similar sense of revulsion or loss when they're told to check "Black" or the other categories on those forms, like they don't care if you're from Maghreb or Somalia?

City should've sued this guy, rather than throw out the test results.

It's awful hard to preach and practice social equality when certain people in minority communities are spouting hellfire and damnation to their peers. I don't just mean black preachers in black communities...hispanic communities have their bad apples, so do muslim communities, and everyone has heard about the Klan.
Reverse discrimination has been a problem for quite some time. It's a-holes like her and Rev. Boise Kimber, that keep it alive and well. If you are qualified, case closed, you deserve it. If you are NOT qualified, you DON'T deserve it. It's as simple as that.

I am. That's it. It is a Zen perspective. All else is insignificant.
While I don't think you should be "proud" to be Irish, or hispanic, or black, or gay, or raised catholic, or lesbian, or short, or from the wrong side of the tracks, or from the right side of the tracks, or any of a million other attributes you have no control over, I also think you shouldn't be ashamed of these features that are part of who you are, or your totality.
I think to be ashamed or to be proud of something you have no control over is stupid.
You also shouldn't be proud to be stupid.
