Default Rude Weird guy in sushi place tonight

So...my wife and I, and our two sons (16 months old and 7 week old) meet our friends (husband and wife and their two kids 1yr old and 2.5 yr old) up at the local sushi place.

Now this place is a rather small very casual place, very family friendly. More people eat there with their kids than people w/o kids. And its not super quiet but not like bar type loud either.

So we had to wait for a table big enough for 4 adults and 4 highchairs. Yeah its not chucky cheese but its not the super upscale places either.

So they sit us down at a table next to a guy who is obviously way too alone on a friday night. He is sitting there with his reading glasses hanging off his nose and he has a big thick book on the table ON A FRIGGIN BOOK STAND and he's reading like he's at barnes and noble book store or something. 40 something year old guy who probally lives at home with mommy.

So we come in and sit down. It took a few minutes to get bibs fastened, sippy cups out, etc but nothing long or bad. The kids were eating their little snacks and the adults were just talking away.

We got a few looks from this guy, very disapproving looks. He finally snaps his fingers, calls the waitress over, and says " I need a to go bag. I eat here several times on Friday nights and its just too busy for me tonight. <he looks over at us at that point>" he then says "Its way too busy in here, if i had a resturaunt, i wouldnt let that happen. You need to do something about this".

They bring his paperbag and to go boxes and he spends forever opening the paperbag by slinging it back and forth popping it and making the loudest noise possible....and glaring at us. our friends 1 yr old girl just looks back at him and she rolls her eyes at him haha.

At that point, we started talking loud just to make him hurry up.

I mean, who goes to a family resturaunt alone on a friday night and takes a book and a book stand and expects it to be a library?

I really wish it was one of those times when the kids were crying and screaming but our kids and their kids dont really ever do that in public...we dont let it happen.

When the next couple came and sat down, they even commented to us how well behaved all 4 kiddos were- they leave theirs with their grandparents so they can go out since theirs dont behave.... they told us several times they wish theirs would be that good.

anyway, he really looked stupid to us......and i just had to share it with my OT buddies....

I do get a annoyed when people take their bratty kids to fine dining places, especially because if I'm in one, it is probably one of the few times a year my wife and I are getting a night away from the kids. This doesn't sound like that kind of establishment and this guy sounds like a total tool though. You should have tazed him and then complained to the waitress that his outbursts were disturbing your children.

well thats why we went there instead of going to a nicer one. this one is a local very family oriented place. when u walk in and theres a whole stack of high chairs...thats a clue. its still nice but not too nice that kids will ruin the experience.

i just cant imagine being lonely enough to take a book and book stand, prop it up and read it on a friday night.

If you dont like kids or noise or anything else for that matter, in PUBLIC restaurants then you need to stay home in a PRIVATE place. Its a privilege to be able to eat out and if you choose to spend your time being miserable then fine, but leave the other people and their children that have just as much right to be there alone so they can have a happy time!
I feel the same way about people that complain about having to wait in line at the grocery store...grow your own damn food if you dont like being able to shop, choose and pay for the wonderful variety of food supplied at the air conditioned/heated store! JMHO

Some weirdo reading a 500 page book on a freaking book stand would bother me a whole bunch more than if your kids were screaming bloody murder, couse you arnt gona see me eating raw fish anyway, I'd rather a dozen raw oysters, with boiled crawfish that I can break in 2 & suck out there brains then pinch the meat out there tails with a cold draft beer. Hope the guy enjoyed his book.

I remember one time my wife and I were in a restaurant and a couple complained to the waiter about noisy and unruly children at a nearby table. The waiter replied; "I'm sorry sir but this is a family restaurant".

There are family restaurants and there are restaurants that people can't afford to take their children to. Perhaps peace and quiet will require a higher price.

Perhaps a better choice for the book reader would have been Barnes & Nobel or Starbucks ...

You can eat, drink, read & be merry there ... but some people just want a little drama & be considered a victim. ....

oh we'll do the sushi and sashimi stuff anyday but we'll drop what we are doing and head to your house if u are doing a crawfish boil!! i introduced my wife to crawfish as well as raw oysters...they are amongst her favorites now....cannot wait till crawfish season then my parent's motorcycle group does an annual trip in may to lousiana to one of their parent's houses for a good ol' boil.

we eat lots of weird stuff....finally found out that central market carries the snails i needed for escargot again so we had that the other night....

but yes, creepy old man reading book on a book stand in a family resturant did bug us....

Red face Re: Rude Weird guy in sushi place tonight

I'd be asking the manager of the place how that guy can do what he does.. and politely point out that it is not courteous of the guy to be doing what he is doing considering public manners are at issue here.

Failing that, I'll drag my 6'2" frame to the guy's table.... and ask him why he is whining so much.

Sanosuke!

My diagnosis he was simply being a azzhole. Loners that are unable to make friends sometimes have that affliction. So they find other means to attract attention by, as you mention, doing the "victim" routine.

Yea that aint cool at all especialy with your kids there. Glad everythang o.k. cause he sounded mental. On a lighter note the escargot on garlic bread dipped in butter is real good. AS far as sushi goes it's probably good if at the right place, just I got off on the wrong foot & never recovered, if you know what I mean

The restaurant was probably glad to get rid of him. Your party had 4 + kids, as compared to 1 idiot taking up a table to read a damn book. I"d toss his azz out to the curb!

oh the way we do it is the escargot is in the little holes in the dish and share space with a mushroom cap and garlic and butter, covered in parmesean cheese (grated..not the powdery pizza topping type). after u eat the little snail and mushroom u take a piece of french bread and shove it into the hole soaking up the garlic butter....yum yum.

i know what u mean about getting off on the wrong foot on food...my dad did that with raw oysters back when he was a kid....didnt work so well and he cant stand the sight of them. dam im hungry now.

i too once got off on the wrong foot with sushi. while living in Japan my dad once told me that the food was uncooked and that it could reach up and choke me while i was eating it. as a 7 yo boy, i couldnt imagine anything worse. i didnt start to love Japanese food until after i had already moved away from Japan.

YUMMMOOOOO crawfish...I LOVE crawfish, my friends tell me it is poor mans lobster but I absolutely love it. I am looking forward to Valentines Day because my friends and I have always had a tradition of having a cajun boil, we skipped a few years for a while there but I think we are going to start up again! Its so much fun and such great interaction between people...just like our fondue parties!
