With the U.S. Census process beginning, the Better Business Bureau (BBB) advises people to be cooperative, but cautious, so as not to become a victim of fraud or identity theft. The first phase of the 2010 U.S. Census is under way as workers have begun verifying the addresses of households across the country. Eventually, more than 140,000 U.S. Census workers will count every person in the United States and will gather information about every person living at each address including name, age, gender, race, and other relevant data.
The big question is - how do you tell the difference between a U.S. Census worker and a con artist? BBB offers the following advice:
** If a U.S. Census worker knocks on your door, they will have a badge, a handheld device, a Census Bureau canvas bag, and a confidentiality notice. Ask to see their identification and their badge before answering their questions. However, you should never invite anyone you don't know into your home.
** Census workers are currently only knocking on doors to verify address information. Do not give your Social Security number, credit card or banking information to anyone, even if they claim they need it for the U.S. Census.
REMEMBER, NO MATTER WHAT THEY ASK, YOU REALLY ONLY NEED TO TELL THEM HOW MANY PEOPLE LIVE AT YOUR ADDRESS.
While the Census Bureau might ask for basic financial information, such as a salary range, YOU DON'T HAVE TO ANSWER ANYTHING AT ALL ABOUT YOUR FINANCIAL SITUATION. The Census Bureau will not ask for Social Security, bank account, or credit card numbers, nor will employees solicit donations. Any one asking for that information is NOT with the Census Bureau.
AND REMEMBER, THE CENSUS BUREAU HAS DECIDED NOT TO WORK WITH ACORN ON GATHERING THIS INFORMATION.. No Acorn worker should approach you saying he/she is with the Census Bureau.
Eventually, Census workers may contact you by telephone, mail, or in person at home. However, the Census Bureau will not contact you by Email, so be on the lookout for Email scams impersonating the Census.
Never click on a link or open any attachments in an Email that are supposedly from the U.S. Census Bureau.

c'mon man. It's a census, not the Thought Police determining whom to shoot in the back of the neck. All sorts of useful and important statistics come out of the census, so might as well contribute as much as you can.

I think the point is, When in doubt, that is all you have to tell them. This is more of a warning against Scam Artists than an anti-government rant.

I understand the point of your post, but Waterhead tends to be more of a conspiracy theorist by nature...leery of the government, and there's little need for that when it comes to the census.

Since Obama decided to move the census under the control of the White House for the first time in history and wanted ACORN involved, I would have to go with Waterhead on this one. The only reason to do that is to politicize the process. Remember, this will determine seats in Congress and lhow lots of government spending is doled out so it is a VERY politically sensitive issue.

The Bureau of the Census is part of the Commerce Department and always has been.

But it does say Obama wants control. Nothing about him actually getting control. And the politics surrounding the Census is nothing new. It's been that way as long as there has been federal money to be had based on populations.

Yep, that's why some politicians get their districts moved around, shaped, and/or resized...to get the prime type of constituent conducive to their reelection.
It does also say that ACORN is not involved in the census taking....granted, since census takers are volunteers, ACORN may be urging its members to volunteer and not name any affiliation with ACORN.

I am fairly new to this politics crap. never cared before now, wish i could turn away just cann't. But, my question is, why does the consensus people need more than how many live in your house? maybe your name, and the names of the people living there, but on earth would they need more?
I don't like poeple asking me tons o questions about personal stuff anyways, dont care who is in controll, but i am one o those conspericy theorist types. I just really want to know why they would need any ohter info?
