Default Mp3 Player Reccomendations

Hey guys -

So here's the deal. I'm leaving the country for 4 months and DO NOT want to take my 2 huge CD cases with me, nor do I want to be burning endless CD's of mp3s so I can listen to them on my CD player and buy batteries all the time.

SO, I'm getting an MP3 player. I've been mostly looking into the 20GB iPod.

There are a few things I need to keep in mind:
1. Space. Needs to be AT LEAST 15GB, but not over 30.
2. Battery life. How easy it is to recharge, how long does it last, etc, etc.
3. Abilities. What can I plug it into, what software is on it (alarm, calendar, etc)
4. User Friendly. Can I create on the go playlists? Can I view by genre, artist, album, etc, etc?

Any suggestions/reccomendations would be extremely appreciated.

Oh yeah, I use windows. Thanks!

-A.J.

go for the iPOD! my brother just got one and he love's it. personally i don't need one, but i got a little 128mb mp3 player and it works fine for me when i go bike riding. PLUS, since you're on windows, using Apple's iTunes allows to synch with a pc.

have a safe trip!

I love my iPod but I need a bigger one (got the first 10 gig out for the PC). But, iTunes rocks so much! Today my friend showed me today his brand new 20 gig and its really sweet. I ran out of room on mine tho. The only other MP3 player I'd even consider is the new Archos just because it can play videos, show pics, and is 20 gig. I have no clue how good it is though.

Go for the IPOD. Nothing even compares to it right now on the market. The 10 GB is now discontinued. There are many sizes to chooze from now...15, 20, 30, 40 GB.

Too bad you live in CO because I work for Best Buy

Me and a couple of my good friends are all Technology freaks. For example my current project is trying to figure out how to convert my living room into a Theater using a Dell Projector, screen, and surround sound.

I am also a subscriber to Maximum PC, which is in my opinion the bible of technology. From the reviews and comments on all the MP3 players out there, the IPod simply cannot be touched. It is the best player out there as far as user interface, quality, size, storage, etc. The closest thing to it is the new Creative Labs Zen X or something like that. They tried to copy the IPod but just didn't do enough. The IPods are pricey but if I had to buy any MP3 player it would be the only one I would consider.

By the way, where in the he** are you going for 3 months???

Semester at sea. I leave January 16th, get back on April 26th.

I am 98% sure I'm going for the iPod, the only concern I have being battery life.

The one and only thing I'm going to miss is my truck. It's gunna be a target for key scratches, dust, dirt, and my family.

It's got plenty of battery life. Don't let the 2% thats worrying about battery life make you not get the iPod, because it's just amazing.

Well, provided that the money is right on whatever deal(s) I can get, I'm getting a 20GB iPod, and buying the external battery backup (4 AA's) for 40 bucks from buy.com. Anyone have an opinion on the reliability/durability of the external battery pack? I saw one of the new iPods in person the other day, and jesus is it small for what it can do... I love it!!! Thanks for the suggestions/opinions, I appreciate it.

When I get back from abroad I'm going to get an AUX input connector from BlitzSafe (if no one else makes them yet before I get back) and one of those cup-holder/iPod-Holder accesories. From checking out all over the Web, applerockies.com (my school's designated Apple store, though any univeristy/college gets the same discount) has the best price on the unit, and buy.com seems to be the best price for any/all accessories.

No worries man. I'm sure we can arrange a meet-up when I'm home for break, too.

What about Dell's new mp3 player? 16 hours of battery life, a little less than 2 ounces heavier than iPod, 20GB, for 299?

It seem's the IPod last a little than 9 hours, and the Dell unit is the next in line for performance. Here's a page that compares the top 8 units http://www.techtv.com/freshgear/prod...559981,00.html

Good Luck on your choice---IPod seem's the way to go!

Well, I ordered my personalized iPod from my apple educational website for $369 (20GB), and it got 'delivered' today. It either got stolen (was supposed to be left inside the door and to the left of my apartment/frat house) or something else happened to it. Fortunately I know it was none of the guys I live with, but could have easily been someone walking thru, or FedEx's mistake. I already had to deal with a big UPS mistake earlier this week.... shipping companies really piss me off. Luckily, it's insured on the credit card I bought it on, so the saga will continue. Anyhow, thanks for all the reccomendations. I solved the battery life issue by buying a belkin ipod battery backup - up to 20 hours of time. I got it dirt cheap at www.buy.com. So I have everything I need - except the iPod!
