I pulled-out onto a busy street Sunday night and gunned the gas as I always do - leaving a little rubber - then CLUNK! CLUNK! CLUNK! CLUNK! it felt like I just ran over a bunch of 50 gal barrels! I veered-off the road and the clunking subsided briefly. I got out and looked and saw no physical damage, so I eased back on to the road and it slowly came back but then went away after I straightened-out the wheel and sped up. It was only after I got my self turned around and headed back home that I realized it was the right-rear (drive wheel) that was affected. It acted as if I busted some teeth off in the differential or something.
I was able to hobble over to the closest Toyota dealer (a fairly new one just down the street from me, but have never used their service dept yet). and left the keys in the night drop box explaining the prob.
Finally talked with the service guy around Noon and they confirmed the nasty noise - and let me know that the truck is well out of warranty and it was going to cost about $500 to tear it apart to see what's wrong with it. He also said that it looks like it's seen a lot of off-road action and it appeared to have been "airborne" a couple times! Who, ME?!!
Soooo... I guess I may now be paying for being so rough on my truck. I won't deny that I drive it hard (unlike a previously-banned individual who shall remain nameless) don't blame this incident on a weak drive-train or poor product in any way. I can't believe what this truck has endured to date!
I just hope she'll be alright - I'll know more tomorrow. It might just be time to get that LSD I've been putting off for so long anyway while they have it cracked open, so maybe I can turn this around as a good thing after all!
I just know I better treat her with a little more love and respect when I get her back!

Hey Jeff,
BUMBER MAN!
But hey... "there is always a silver lining to every cloud"... and the above quote from you is... a "GREAT TESTIMENT" as to the durability of the Tundra... in general!!
I'll bet there aren't many more than a handful of TS members here, who've driven their trucks as hard as you have... myself included... who can "actually" give such a testimony. You play hard... well... you pay hard! But hey, you've acknowledge that and accepted it. Even so man... your "misshap" is a great testiment/advertisment for the toughness of the Tundra!
And some "other" truck owners (i.e. domestic truck lovers & Titan lovers) say the Tundra isn't a "real" truck!!! Now, isn't "that" a real laugh!

I feel your pain man. My hard driving this summer took its toll on my front axle. But, now I have manual hubs . So... just go with a SAS front and use Dynatrac's front and rear.

Me too. On my previous ride, my 92 Mazda, there was more than one occassion when my CV joints didn't see eye to eye with a rock. Then there was the Great Snow Turd Disaster of 1998 where I bent a rim. Not a pretty sight.
I already munched my front diff. Certainly not as much of a pain as a rear diff. The spider gears are WAY too small. You can shore it up by going with lockers and eliminating the spider gears. That is my plan...when I have some $$$.
Keep us posted, and best wishes for a healthy recovery...

...airborne a couple of times? dude, you need PPL (private pilots license). if you take passengers, youll need a commercial pilots license. the only toyota ive personally had airborne was my alltrac celica. my g/For Sale butt just about touched the roof.
sorry bout your baby. get it fixed, learn how to fix em, drive like he!!, break it, and fixit yourself the next time.

I've been on the phone all morning, tracking down parts that the dealer said they could get for about 3-4 days! So I've located the parts and their driver is going around picking them up. Geez. Seems they would be able to do some kind of parts location, don'tchathink?
Anyway - bottom line is, I'll have my truck back no later than Thursday - and just in time to get her ready for the big NCTS Race on Sat! And I'll be $2400 poorer for the experience - but at least I'll have a warranted rear-end with TRD LSD. (There HAS to be a silver lining somewhere!)
So - Guess I really did it this time! Think I'll keep all 4 wheels on the ground from now on... and take those corners a little easier as well!

dude, thats some big $$$ for a rear end. ever consider aftermarket, Dana, Chevy, etc. its not like it is independant like a ricer sports car. just asking.
