"New United Motor Manufacturing, Inc. (NUMMI), a 50-50 joint venture between General Motors (GM) and Toyota. NUMMI makes Tacoma pickup trucks and Corolla sedans for Toyota, and Chevrolet Prizm sedans (which may be discontinued and replaced by a next-generation model) for GM. The Tacoma pickup is made only at the NUMMI plant in Fremont, California. The company is also tooling up to offer an additional model in 2003 -- the Pontiac Vibe sport wagon. NUMMI can produce 220,000 cars and 150,000 pickups a year. Together GM and Toyota are researching alternative-fuel vehicles to meet strict emissions requirements." http://www.hoovers.com/co/capsule/5/...,40345,00.html

I didn't know about Toyota Marine being affiliated, how about Toyota forklifts?

Prior to 1984 the Fremont plant was GM. Toyota wanted an easy way to start their first factory in the US, and GM wanted to learn how the Japanese built such good cars so cheaply. NUMMI was born.
Since that time there has been identical Toyota and Chevy or GEO brand compact cars built in Fremont. The Tacoma is all Toyota, built by UAW workers in a California factory half owned by each company.
When we were first married my wife had a Morse sewing machine made by Toyoda. My '94 T100 (made in Japan) had a Harrison radiator and a Delco battery which are both products of GM. The old original Land Cruiser engines were almost a carbon copy of a Chevy 235. The carburetors were also very similar to a Carter YF. I used to use some of the same tools to work on them as on the Carter carbs. When the T-100 was first discussed in the automotive magazines it was rumored that it was to be equipped with a Chevy V8. Supposedly Chevy nixed the idea.

Hmm...Toyota cars, houses, forklifts, marina, and now sewing machines? I wonder if they make Toyota underwear--->
"Built to last", "toughest underwear rated by JD Power and Associates", "the interior is near perfect", "economical, yet sporty", and my personal favorite "low emissions" or "gas efficient"...hehe
Toys-I heard someone say that there was some sort of an agreement with the US government and that the Japanese auto manufacturers could not import fullsize trucks to the US because of this. I dismissed it because I had never heard this and also because I never heard of it again from anyone else. Is there such an agreement? I'm really curious.
