I'm a diehard costal fisherman that lives in New Braunfels, TX. I'm about 2.5 hours from my door to the water so I woke up at 4:00 on Saturday and headed out. It was dark when I left and I drove for about 2 hours before it started getting light. What was wierd was that it seemed like as I looked at the road, it always appeared as if I was climbing. I live at 800 ft sea level and drove to sea level so I had more downhill than uphill. Plus, I've been down that road a hundred times and I know where it is hilly and where it is flat. Anyone else have this optical illusion? I tried it with fog lights on and off and it still looked as if I was going up hill. Maybe it's a tumah....

I used to live in Austin and am a diehard saltwater flyfisherman. I have made that trip a zillion times, San Marcos, Seguin, Karnes city, Beeville, Sinton, Port A. I've never had that experience going down there but had it once on the way back...
I didn't catch squat and now I'm thinking I need neurological help. I don't do drugs, wasn't drinking and wasn't shrinking. It did almost make me car sick which is something I've never had happen before. Today, I've got a major sinus infection so I'm thinking it may have been vertigo. Just wanted to see if anyone else experienced this and if it was maybe related to the way the windshield, hood, cab come together on the truck. Meaning, the way the view is presented when looking out the windshield. I'm probably overthinking this. My truck is brand new and that is the first time I've driven a long distance at night with it. Hope it doesn't happen again.
I'm in Gulfport, Mississippi now. Spent 30+ years in Austin way too far from the fish. Spend my time fishing the Biloxi marsh and Florida. Just bought my second Tundra Thursday (TRD DC). First was a 2002 TRD, put 89k on it and never once had that problem. Did see a naked lady run across the street in Austin. Tried like hell to recreate that problem but couldn't. I'd blame it on the sinus infections, they are killers.
Might. If it was foggy and the light are aimed up it could look like you were going up. Your eyes (and mind) are saying going up but you body is saying going level. I think that would make me queazy or sick after a while. The light at sunrise can do all sorts of cool things. Magical time of day. This could be a Marfa lights sort of thing!
I do like that hour before sunup. I prefer to be on the water at that time. Gulfport is near a lot of great fishing. My in-laws are in Taylorsville, MS. I make an annual trip to Chandeleur Islands going out of Venice and absolutely have a ball each time I go. I also have fished Gulf Shores Alabama, but not in a year cuz of the hurricane damage.
Well, I'm no scientist but I believe I remember hearing something about that being an optical illusion or something like that. It is due to the humidity in the air causing a change in the pressure and with the rising sun warming up the ambient air.

You live in G-port now? or just visiting? I live about 15 - 20 minutes north of ya up in Stone county. I was just down at the yota dealership today picking up my tundra from the shop.

Man, I didn't realize I had any other members around me. I'll be here in south Mississippi for another month or so, PM me if ya'll need a fishin buddy or somethin I'm always up for a boat trip.
You probably had a sinus infection brewing. The congestion affected your inner ear and balance, and a lack of visual clues obscuring the horizon caused your optical illusion. These conditions have been documented: uphill illusion.
Then again it could be vertigo, a virus, allergic reaction to some of the plastic compounds used in your truck, alien abduction, or simply the result of living in Texas.
Drink lots of fluids, get plenty of rest, take a couple of aspirin and post in the morning.
