As I said in the beginning, I have to think, that the comments made by Toyota, are nothing more than a simple "COP-OUT"!!
With all respect, Dave, Toyota has the right to NOT build here because of the exact reasons they stated. I don't think Toyota should've come out and actually said what they did about people in the South... I'm sure they had the chance to sell a few vehicles down there. How many people from the South that read Toyota's statement will never buy a Toyota again? I bet there's a few. I think Toyota should've just kept their mouth shut about it... even if they're right.
Oh, and Nucleus, thanks for turning another thread into a political debate.
Looks like you caught a few with that bait.

Not to insult but how is an idiot going to know they are an idiot unless some one tells them. I guess it is up to the "South" to show what they got.
I think it is great How Nucleus can pop into a thread make some political jab then run back to the political discussion thread and then there are some poor people debating on the WRONG thread. Nucleus is on the Political discussion thread.
KEEP your jabs there please Nucleus, This is for other discussions.

I will not buy a Canadian built Toyota, and it has nothing to do with the president or any other political agendas.
The Lexus vehicles built in Canada are not up to par with the Japanese built ones. Parts are sourced elsewhere (compared to the Japanese factories),and whoever these sources are built second-rate parts. And this is a fact...the faulty parts I've been replacing are on Canadian Lexus vehicles, none of the "J"-VIN'ed ones had this parts failure. I don't blame the factory workers,it's not their fault when they're given crappy parts to work with.

It's become obvious that Japanese manufactured Toyotas set the standard when it comes to quality, quality control, and reliability.
I think the parts will come from wherever Toyota decides they'll come from, whether the vehicles are made in Canada or here in the States. The main point is the skill of the workers, not the quality of the parts they install.

I hope that you guys realize that half of the GM and Ford products are manufactured in Canada. It is a lot cheaper to get them built up there and theres that education thing. Not disrespecting the south, but I cant blame toyota. Would you want your vehicle being put together by people assemblying them with flashcards as their means of knowledge?

There are a lot of northern states that have a fairly highly educated work force that is being under utilized. There's great economic reason to tap the work force that is there since they're already there and not being used to their highest potential. The problem is "growing the campus" after the initial investment sucked up the local work force.
That's one of the reason's to move a plant to North or South Dakota (and such). But then you've got to get people to move there if they don't already live there. That's not so easy.
Not that any of those northern places are bad, but they are a little colder than many people are used to and that's a bit of a tough sell.
Don't really understand the quote. It's too bad what was said. I'm sure a dozen other reasons could have been given rather than taking a shot at its own workers.
I can say this, I have a 2005 Tacoma and the quality is first rate. My truck was built in California and I'm very impressed with the overall quality. Sure I had a few glitches - but this was not the fault of the fine people who built my truck.
All I can say is don't make too much of this. After all it's only the Rav 4 that this new plant will be building.
I read some of the post in this thread and I think an important thing to realize and the reason Toyota would make such a statement refering to more skilled workers in Canada is that there are a lot of experienced auto workers in southern Ontario out of worked from the ford factories closing down lately. That is an important factor to take in consideration.
My pride and patriotism wants to tell Toyota to take a hike, but in reality we've all known this is where our country is headed. This isn't just a Southern thing either. I doubt Detroit is better educated than say Birmingham. Our schools have been dumbed down and our kids spend hours in front of the tv and xbox. I'm certain the jobs pay well enough that they could have filled them with better educated people, but how many various groups would sue for discrimination? This should be a wake up call, but how do you wake a Nation from a coma? I can't imagine where we'll be in another 20 years.
Not only will this help toyota as planned by having the plant in Ontario, but they will be able to ship them around more easily. I am thinking they are planning on using ships to them on voyage to wherever they are being sold.
Just a marketing stategy and stategic plan as to toyota and the symbol that lies on all our tucks, the circles represent the North, East, South and West corners of the world and toyotas vision of having everyone driving a TOYOTA.
I work in the longshoring industry and see ships full of thousands of cars come into Washington state so there is one corner to the west providing to the east. So ONTORIO is wouldn't you say the North, so I would say TOYOTA is fullfiling part of their vision in the automotive industry.
Maybe toyota will consider the southern states once everyone gets their crap together. I don't live or hear much about the south but know it's got its share of problems. TOYOTA is not ready yet
maybe all the people from the south shouldn't build toyotas if they don't want a domination in the car industry. I know I don't want everyone driving ajust toyota cars/trucks
