Default Echo control arm bushings

This guy I know has a small repair shop and specializes in Toyotas. He claims he can replace the bushings in the Echo control arm without replacing the control arm. He won't disclose his secret, but I assume he must use bushings from other makes or models since Toyota only supplies control arms with bushings pre-installed. Has anyone heard of this technique? Is it even workable?
