Most of the time when a car rear ends another and the car in back suffers most, it is because of the heavy braking of the second car, and the resulting nosedive causes the rear vehicle to take the bumper through the grille area, rather than to the bumper. Open the hood of a vehicle and look at the crease in the center of the inner hood panel, this crease causes even a minor collision to fold the hood and keep it from coming through the windshield and decapitating the driver, but it makes a minor collision look much worse than it is.

Almost all cars made over the last 10 years will have a lot more damage on the front end vs. the rear in an accident.

the front is designed to absorb the energy of the impact by crumpling/breaking apart where the rear is not.
