I went to autozone and they said they couldnot do it today because its raining out here and i would get that code tomorrow or by monday and will update you with the code .
Clean or replace the MAF.
Make sure all vacuum lines at the air filter box are properly routed and installed.
Make sure the last tank of fuel you filled up with IS NOT E-85.
Those are the 3 major problems.

Hi, I've got a 2000 Toyota echo I picked up a couple months ago for a commuter. Its an automatic with ~100k on it. It is exhibiting what I describe as "stumbling" periodically when driving (occurrences are spaced a minute or so apart without any noticeable pattern). Basically seems like its missing sporadically. All the while there is no check engine light coming on which seems odd to me.
With the mindset of air/fuel/spark I've started ticking things off the "what could be wrong" list. I went ahead and cleaned the MAF, swapped in Denso plugs (had some bosch in it when I got it) and put in a set of remanufactured injectors (previous owned said it did something like that before but having the injectors cleaned cleared it up for a while). The problem has gotten better with all these things (prior to the remanufactured injectors I needed to stop driving it for a bit while they were on order because the idle was so ruff it seemed like it was going to stall) but it is definitely still there. The car drives relatively well and is getting 35mpg, but I'd like to get this straightened out especially if it has the potential to do damage in the long run.
Right now I'm not entirely sure what I should be focusing on next, o2 sensor, fuel filter? Could the wiring the the coils be shorting occasionally? The fact this is sporadic has me guessing. Any help would be appreciated.
Well its now stalling often when I'm stopped at lights so I need to do something about this. Figure I'll start with o2 sensor in the next day or so unless someone has a better idea?
We need codes. The 02 sensor is doubtfully causing a stalling issue. Code will point us in the right direction. I would opt more for a coil issue, before I condemed a 02 sensor.
The way you descibe it, it sounds like an engine miss. You have new plugs (excellent), the next thing is to read engine codes or look at some sort of scan tool data and see if there is a CYLINDER missfire, also check fuel pressure, Cleaning a MAF doesnt always work, sometimes you have to just replace it, but a code would help tell us the area that might be at fault.

Will it show codes even without a check engine light? That is what is weird about all this it isn't throwing a light at all. I definitely agree it feels like a miss, I didn't know if it was due to lean fuel or lack of spark or what is all. I balked at doing the o2 as a shot in the dark when I noticed double sensors, sorta an expensive en devour without knowing that is the issue.
I will be gone for the next 2 weeks on vacation, doubt if I will have internet access, but will try to see what you come up with.
yes you can have codes without a check engine light, they might be pending or in history. It might help us isolate which cylinder(s) is/are causomg the problem.

So I finally got around to doing some more on this (been busy). We went out of town this weekend and dropped the car off at the dealer on our way out. Got a call later about it. Says there was a pending random cylinder miss code but no hard codes to pin it on an injector or spark plug, etc. Said they checked to coils packs out and then passed as well. The only input they had for me was that maybe I got some bad gas and that is the extent of what they did about it. Little irritated that is where they left it and didn't try and determine if that was truly the problem or not. The problem has been around for multiple tanks of gas and we switched stations/brands a few tanks ago (last few were 76, might try out chevron and see if that helps). However our other vehicles were filled at the same station without issue. Anyways I'll be picking it back up Monday afternoon, curious what that possible diagnosis will run... Honestly I can't imagine more than an hour to pull the codes and check the packs out.
Anyways with that input I guess I'll try putting some dry gas in there in case there is water and see what happens. Sorta expected a little more closure on the issue by taking it to the dealer.
Does any one have an idea as to how much replacement of break pads for 2000 echc costs
Can anyone suggest the best Break Pads and Rotor brands for 2000 toyota echo
Thanks in advance
David
Brake job should be approx $199 for pads and turning of the rotors.
Use STOCK TOYOTA PADS and rotors.

With a pending misfire code, I would opt for changing the coils.
If you feel the miss then I would say coils are the best bet, just because they test good doesnt mean they are ok. They may have and intermitant break down internal problem that happens now and then and it will be almost immpossible to find until they finally go bad. I SAY REPLACE THE COILS.
Did they say what the code was exacxtly (P0300)?An 02 sensor will not cause a miss, nor will a MAF sensor. The plugs are new as are the injectors, this only leaves a few things and the coils are the easiest to change.
It also could be excessive carbon build up, this will cause a RANDOM engine misfire code but usually people do not feel the miss. The carbon build up absorbes the fuel on the back of the intake valve and makes the engine run lean. The ecu is sensitive enough to find the miss, but most humans can not feel it. We clean this by running water thru the engine, but this must be done with the utmost care, as water can hydro-lock and engine if to much is added to quick. Someone has to know what they are doing to do this correctly.
The water added vaporizes and cools the combustion chamber, this hot/cool proccess helps to break off carbom deposits on the valves and on the tops of the pistons. Be careful when doing this, we usually run about a gallon of water on a 40 mile roadtest, it can be destructive if not done properly.

are you sure the RETURNING ENGINE LIGHT is a p0171 and not a different code?
If it is a p0171, and cleaning the MAF did not work , then we usually take a fuel sample and make sure the alcohol content of the fuel is 10% or less. The next thing is to make sure are the vacuum lines are routed properly. Fuel pressure test??
The last thing it could be is a 02 sensor, but without seeing fuel TRIM data from a scan tool all of this is only guesstimates.
