Hi, I am driving a 2000 Toyota Echo and i bought it 1 year ago. when I first bought it, right after I drove off the dealer in about 10 minutes and the engine check light was on. I went to Auto Zone right after and they checked it was a problem of the O2 sensor with the code PO141. I replace the sensor 2 months later, but it went back on after I pick up my car at the shop. They told me the other one is malfunction too, so I went and replace the 2 second too. But after that the code was popped up again..Since then I never really change anything of my car..But I keep checking see if the code has changed or not. I went to auto Zone and checked today and it's still PO141 this code. Which is different then everyone in this post. Could you help me to see what is wrong with my car? thank you very much!!
First off, you need to check the voltages going to the O2 sensor heater circuit. If you do not have the proper voltage then the ECU is probably bad (or the wrong one) or you have a problem in the wire harness to the sensor.
The next thing is to check the ground side of the circuit. That sensor has a connector behind the glove box that also goes to the ecu for the ground, or there may be a problem in the wire harness.
P0141 is for the REAR (behind the cat) sensor not the front one.
I hope you used a TOYOTA sensor not an aftermarket. The Toyota sensors are just as inexpensive as the aftermarket ones.
see attachments for help diagnosing.

If your not so good at electrical, you should get some help from someone who is, and most of the people at AUTO ZONE and places like that are not that good.

Hey there! Signed up because of the valuable information here.
I'm currently receiving the P0172 code (fuel too rich) from my '00 Echo.
The symptoms I have are exactly what I've read at the beginning of this thread - idle speed is lower than normal, car stutters on acceleration.
I cleaned the MAF sensor (it was FILTHY, like, entirely black on one side!) - I noticed immediate improvement, but the same code popped up again 2 days later. I cleaned the sensor again, thinking I may have missed a spot, but the light reappears shortly after. I cleaned with the non-chlorinated carb/brake cleaner, and dried off.
A couple things that may or may not be important: I used to drive this car over long distances (1 continuous hour twice a day, freeway driving) - I used 89 fuel because I actually got much better gas milage than the 87 I typically use. At the start of this year, I moved closer to work, and my drive time has been cut down to 4-10 minutes, city driving. I stuck with the 89 fuel out of habit - could that be the culprit for "fuel too rich"? The check engine light started appearing about 9 months after I moved.

Any help is appreciated, thanks!
"FUEL TO RICH" P0172 means the engine is running to lean and the computer is dumping more fuel thsn it thinks it should be for too long a time. I would look for a vacuum leak, vacuum hoses on wrong, a leaking brake booster or a plain old BAD MAF.
Need scan tool data and some on hands to figure out which, but this should get you started.

I suspect it could be a bad MAF - the original "clean side" was shiny, but the dirty side, after being cleaned, still looks like it has a cloudy film on it.
I have a scan tool...what data should I be looking for besides the generic p0172?
MAF G/Sec
Short term fuel trim
Long term fuel trim
Injector pulse
Fuel pressure
O2 sensor output voltage

Loose or bad gas cap or hose off at aircleaner@vsv or
a cracked ORVR. The ORVR is located in the top of the fuel tank (see attchment).
The attachment is a picture of a camry, but they are the same idea.

Thank you so much! This is definitely great help. We already tried removing the gas cap and reinstalling it and cleared the code but after a day the check engine light was on again. We did not get a new gas cap though, should I get one anyway?
Also, for the hose off at aircleaner@vsv - would you have a picture or a guideline on how to find the aircleaner@vsv (I am not too sure what this is)?
People like you that are always ready to help others make a huge difference! I cannot thank you enough for taking the time to respond

Just wanted to thank you for your great help! A hose was off at the VSV so we fixed that and the light is now fixed. Thank you, thank you, thank you!!!!
Hi. New Here. Original Owner of 2001 Toyota Echo. Car has been great too me. This last week y check engine light came on. It had been about a week after having my car serviced at Jiffy but honestly didn't think it was my air filter since it had been a week... normally if they missed something it only takes a day or two for the light to come on. Decided to search online for possible reasons why my engine light would come on when I came across this forum. Saw that I could have AutoZone pull the codes so stopped there. Was given code P0440 and told it was my evap canister and that the part was $299. Asked if I could still drive it and was told it was fine to drive just won't pass emissions until the canister is replaced.
Over the weekend I searched for more info and saw something about codes for topping off your gas and I had done that the night before my light went on.. Sorry I really know nothing about cars... Cleared the code but it came on again today. Decided to stop at the Jiffy Lube and have them make sure the air filter was fine. They checked and all was good, they gave me the codes that came up for them - P0420 and P0440. Local dealership here charges $99 just to run the diagnostics. Was hoping someone here might be able to give me some advise or information on possible reasons for these codes, cost to fix and whether I can really drive the car. You all seem to know your stuff and people have received good information so I would appreciate any help.

Check the pdf's above 2 posts. If the EVAP VSV hose is ok, then you probably have a CRACKED ORVR, this valve is in the top of the fuel tank. That should be the P0440.
The P0420 is a bad or inefficient Catalytic converter, not an 02 sensor ar anythig else.
I have attached a picture of a cracked ORVR, very common here on the west coast.
I recommend going back and reading this entire post, there is tons of good information from many TS members.
